Just realised someone has stolen the black cover from the right hand side of my bike! Ordered used one off Ebay for £12. What sort of knob would rather steal another biker's stuff to avoid paying £12?
Hope it falls off and puts the fecker up a tree, upside down with their bike in flames.
Nothing personal. :smt021
People who push the button then cross the road without waiting for the lights to change, so I have to stop for an empty crossing... [emoji6]

The lights around here are hopeless. You push to cross and wait an age for the green man. Needless to say, you can usually cross safely whilst waiting and most do.

Cars
I listed the faults I've had with my car in another thread, but the list is now longer.
Glow plugs. The plugs have failed but the tips are seized in the tubes. So that's four tips stuck in the head. Best offer so far is £450 to remove them without stripping the head. But then the cam chain needed replacing anyway.
Would anyone like to give me a new car, or winning lottery ticket?

Common problem with the Zafira, this bloke can do it without taking the head off, he quoted £120 for the first one, then £60 for the last 3, if you need all three doing. Although if you're doing them, you may as well do all 4
https://www.threadworx.co.uk/
But as you say, if you've got to do the camchain, then the heads got to be taken off.
Red ones
27-01-18, 05:38 PM
Sounds promising. So if I have that right it's £180 for all four tips?
Then presumably the cost of the new plugs.
maviczap
27-01-18, 05:43 PM
Sorry £60 for each remaining tip? So £300 plus the replacement's
You can test the glow plugs with a multi meter to see which ones aren't working, but you'll need to Google how to?
Red ones
27-01-18, 05:50 PM
Sounds about the same price as the guy in Finchley.
The odd thing is Click Mechanic suggests £250 to change the cam chain. If that involves taking the head of, which I thought it did on the Zafira, then I may as well do that and get the tips (it's all of them!) Knocked through with a drift.
maviczap
27-01-18, 06:06 PM
May as well if the heads coming off. Although I'd go on a Zafira/Vauxhall owners site and see if it has too, if you haven't already done so?
That's why I haven't had my plugs done yet, as mines coming up to the mileage where the chain needs replacing too. Trouble is; is my car really worth spending that kind of money on, as its 14 years old now?

Just starting the Probate process for my mum's estate, and part way completing HMRCs online registration when our power tripped out.
Not helped by my brother's inability to remember his NI number, as he got it wrong, the site wouldn't accept it, and then the power went off :smt021:smt021

That might not be the source. Shortly after moving into our new build house, the house electrics would trip the fuse when any one of several pieces of equipment were switched on. We called the electricians back under warranty and it took them two days to find the problem. It was our study/office electrics. We had 2 tower pc's and two printers in there that were running fine but we were told that the earth on the PC's were the problem and were loading the system up to its limit. As soon as another appliance started it would trip the electrics.

House insurance renewal quote silly, did comparisons, phoned existing company, reduction to less than last year without even quibbling. Outcome 10/10, gripe factor 10/10. Forget it now for another year. Breathe.

Isn't it sad that companies do not value loyalty, they treat existing customers as cash cows and give all the best prices to new customers. Avoid auto-renewal like the plague, it sounds convenient but can cost you dear. It is only since new regulations came in a short time ago that insurance companies put last years premium price on the renewals, that has alerted many people that they are getting ripped off (which is why companies had to be forced to do it).

Was it the earth leakage breaker tripping out (rather then current overload ) anything above 30mA leakage live to earth will trip out (used to be 20mA but too sensitive and lots of nuisance tripping, so upped to 30mA). Used to be that earth leakage did not like florescent lights.
switched mode power supplies and filters can contribute to 'leakage'.

What is often not appreciated is that the law requires your insurance company to quote for renewal with no change to policy. This means no change in the insured item and no change in cover. When you ask for a quote you usually find that the cover has changed slightly even if only marginally. The law perpetuates a ridiculous system.
Buying a car to replace one that is dying I needed to insure the new one and keep insurance on the old one until I can get rid. They wanted £70 for just one month temporary cover on the old car when I only pay £240 currently for a whole year.

if it's dying wouldn't it make sense to sorn it and forget the insurance? Or can you still get good money selling on a dying car? :)

The weather. How many Saturdays in a row has it been raining? Too many! We have big windows in the office and it always seems to be delightful outside until it gets to the weekend when it feckin' rains. Tomorrow looks like being better, if you like temperatures barely making up to three or four degrees.

It's not just Saturdays. There is some universal rule that says it shall rain on your day off regardless of day of the week.

The Honda is better built than the SV but English weather can kill any bike. It was frustrating because I've had those bolts out many times and coated them in copper slip to avoid this.

If we had an "agree" button on this forum template I'd be pressing it. I too use Coppaslip on bolts and fixings for the same reason whenever I need to undo anything.
Try Graphite Grease instead & see if that helps. Sometimes when you have a mix of materials (aluminium fork leg/steel screw/coppa slip) it's not as effective asa each one reacts & behaves differently. Similar to alloy wheels on a steel hub. If they've not been off in a while a chemical bond creates with the continual heating/cooling

Yes you get an electrolytic effect. You're not supposed to use copperslip on alloy parts with stainless steel bolts. I had some special antiseize spray that came in an aerosol and looked like grey paint. I think it came from MrFastner. Maybe that was graphite? I've not seen it since.

Molybdenum disulphide (in moly grease or powdered ) makes a good anti-seize as it is a solid lubricant that won't corrode or wash out.
Whenever I have to take wheels off car or do any work underneath I spray chain lube onto any nuts and bolts under there, also spray any exposed brake lines etc.

I do the same with chain lube. I sometimes spray a bit into a cup and brush it on, usually in places where I don't want splatter it all over the place.
Aluminium/stainless/copper is a pretty decent battery.
Aluminium anti-seize paste is better for aluminium applications, I use a Loctite stick version but others are available. For high temps with stainless there is a nickel based version.

Actually that supplier has a great variety of stuff, I've had a few special greases etc from them.

Double gripe. I have a horrible cold which has made me feel like crap for most of this week, achey and shivery. Can't go running or ride the bike for fear of making it worse, but need to keep working as I have clients waiting.

My gripe of the day was nearly getting crushed by an arctic this morning.
He changed lane to allow cars to join the dual carriageway. Shame as I was just coming up to him in the fast lane doing about 75 - he obviously didn't mirror, signal, manoeuver. Just did the manoeuver bit.
It didn't help that it was ****ing down so my visibility was slightly compromised. Yeah yeah I should have anticipated it using my Jedi powers, but....it was 6.30am and they weren't quite working due to lack of coffee.
It's always fun going down the outside by the crash barrier (no it REALLY isn't) as there was nowhere else left to go. Except under it, and I didn't really fancy that for a Friday morning. I'm out out tonight.

2. Spotted an oil leak from my car, its not a big leak, but I can't see where its coming from, so I guess it's at the back of the engine somewhere where I can't get too it. Hope its a simple fix, otherwise its bye bye car

Yeah smarted quite a bit - nothing broken - couldn't lift my arm for about 10 days. All my shoulder muscles decided they didn't like me anymore. My wife wasn't that impressed either.
Glad you are ok Liam. I do think you bounce better when you are younger.
I think over a certain speed - probably somewhere between 10-15mph - you tend to slide rather than tumble. This is probably better as long as you don't slide into anything, and you're wearing slidey-resistant stuff. Or drop off a cliff.
Especially on ice.
"Integral padding" also helps :chef:
Mine was about 25. I had just collected my first big bike after passing my test. I downshifted without pulling the clutch all the way in and the bike highsided me. Now I know why the radio in my car stopped working while I was cleaning it yesterday...
Went to head out this morning to stock up the wine rack - always a pleasant job. Odd, the car won't unlock. Wandered around it pressing the button, nothing. Went back in and got the spare - same result. Fished the little key stub out of the fob (push button start so you only need it for cases like this) and could I get the door open? No... Fished out some pliers and, oh, it turns the other way to unlock manually but there was no way I could have done that by hand! No dash lights, nothing. Multimeter across the battery and it's only showing 8 volts. Fudge.
The moral of the story is don't find you have a dead battery on a Sunday as everywhere that will have a battery for a Focus with stop/start will be shut. Apparently it's a more beefy unit and is not normally kept in stock. Hey ho, I'll shirk from home tomorrow and borrow Lady Poppy's car when she gets home to pop out to Eurocarparts who have them on the shelf, behind a locked (on a Sunday) door.
ps, I got the wine using Lady P's car so it's not too bad.

I was delivering a couple of computers I'd been working on to clients of mine. Decent enough ride in and back apart from the berk in the Audi.

Read this in Time Out magazine. I lived in Crouch End less than 50m from that shop for 3 years around that time, bought my sweeties there every week and didn't see a single zombie.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180221/8ff759f5994d84aefd2e08caa0da432d.jpg

No gripe at all. Its 14*C, and no breeze, predicted to reach 18*C. Second day in Spain, and no return ticket to the UK.

You realise that if you can't see a zombie, you are the zombie :p

Scam phone calls purporting to be from the Telephone Preference service. 2 calls yesterday and another 2 today. Strong Indian accents and claiming to have English names.
** update** another 4 calls today from them making 6.

This is my gripe of the day, people posting stories of warm t shirt type temperatures, when it's absolutely freezing here.
