You don't have to use wood. Hard foam blocks were used as well. Base is a bit of old hardboard or chipboard. I've tested it under the fitted rear wheel and it will work great :)
HTH :)I usually use some spare wood to lift the wheel but this looks like a much better idea. Thanks

Only took me about 30 mins to make and once pumped up it leaves both hands free and I'm sure I can get the axle exactly aligned when required :)
If you change your own tyres don't forget to fit a 90 Deg Tyre valve :)

Public transport. Just got back from my annual visit to London to meet up with my old uni friends and the trains were a joke. Half the services cancelled so everything that did run was dangerously overcrowded. If the drivers were underpaid I could understand, but I don't think they are. Flame me all you like but other people are in charge of: telling them when to start and stop, what route they use, what time they need to keep to, keeping other traffic away from them... They make the train go and bring it to a stop, hell they don't even have to steer! Yes they have a lot of people/freight in their hands but the route knowledge they need to learn and putting up with shifts on their four day week does not justify the salary some news outlets claim they earn. And they're holding the country to ransom claiming they deserve more? Bus and truck drivers have to be way more adaptive and think for themselves more, but get paid way less.
Unions have a valid place and do good work to make sure people are not exploited. On the whole. Some however are clearly out to make political trouble, which is not in their mandate. Nobody on my trains today said anything in support of the continuing action and I am now going to avoid using trains again for the foreseeable future. The public are now hacked off with this dispute and I'm not the only one that thinks it's gone too far. I quite agree that the train operating companies do not employ enough drivers and expect the ones they have to do overtime sometimes, but there are plenty of YouTube videos about made by drivers who show just how little driving they do and how much sitting around there is in their already well paid jobs.
I need a very stiff drink.
The Middle East.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any more confusing and frustrating there is this article:
https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-security-forces-escorted-suitcases-cash-hamas-qatar-report-2023-12?r=US&IR=T
Back in 1977 Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle wrote a fantastic (and mostly gloomy) end of the world book called "Lucifer's Hammer" about a comet hitting the Earth. In great detail he explains (with scientific accuracy) what happens in different part of the world. One thing I always remember is when they write: "with no one left to control them, the Israelis and the Arabs decide to resolve their problems once and for all" (and start a war between themselves as the world is ending). I could believe that. :(
If you like SciFi (and/or post apocalypse novels), it's worth a read. The comet "calves" (breaks into smaller pieces) and the book splits between what happens as each piece strikes a different part of the planet and follows what happens to survivors in California.

Cars!
Yesterday we got a puncture in the big car, rendering it useless as like all modern cars it has no spare. The OE tyres are self sealing (allegedly, experience proves otherwise) so not even a self inflation kit in my car. The wife limped it to the garage who will have a look today. The bright spot is the punctured tyre is due replacement anyway, so I'll have those done a week or two early.
Mel got her son to pick her up in our little car that he has been using for the past few weeks, so we are not without transport. A few miles into the drive to go shopping (her original journey) a check engine light came on! Seems we have a problem with the exhaust on that too. Car manual says its safe to drive with this light on, so we are limping around until we can get that in for analysis.
Grrrrr!
You do wonder when these things happen if there is a malevolent spirit or god making mischief.

Definitely John!
I didn't gripe about the third thing..... I came down to the kitchen yesterday afternoon to make a coffee and found a puddle of water coming from under the fridge/freezer. I was worried the water line to the ise dispenser was leaking, as that would be a pain to sort...... However it was the freezer door not closed properly due to something moving on a shelf. The freezer was defrosting but I happened to catch it in time to not lose anything (maybe the icecream will be a loss). Yesterday was a bad day but only annoyances in the end.

My son's car has runflats, and he's had no luck at all with them. A couple of months back a jagged exposed manhole cover ripped the sidewall of one rear tyre with a 4-inch gash. It was coming up to the car's MoT and they were getting close to being an advisory so he replaced the pair (£300).
Then last week he picked up a large masonry screw in the sidewall of one of the new tyres with only about 1,000 miles on it, couldn't be repaired. Another £150. If the screw had gone in 2" further down it would have been pluggable.
Luckypants
12-12-23, 10:44 AM
Yeah these self-seal are a bit different to run-flats, in that they have gunk in them already to 'seal' any punctures. Run-flats have reinforced sidewalls to allow them to run for a limited time without inflation. both types of tyres are borked if the sidewall is damaged.
Trouble is, the gunk in self-seal means many tyre places won't touch then for a repair as they have to scrape the gunk away and clean out the puncture to affect a repair. At least run-flats can be repaired.....
I think I'll investigate tyre insurance, as I'm about to drop over £400 on two tyres.

Oooof :(
WARNING paypal credit.....
if you take out 4 months interest free and 12 months credit paypal will lump the two together for payments. this means that paypal will concentrate on the interest added payments first and will ignore the 4 months free until the end of the 4 months at which point they will ask for the balance in full. at which point i'm guessing they will say if you cant pay the balance then they will add it over an interest pay.

A few years ago I cycled into town , locked the bike and on trying to unlock it I found I had the wrong key. Went into poundland bought a £1 hacksaw and started to hack through it. No one batted an eyelid apart from one chap that sat on a nearby seat. He asked what I was doing, told him and continued. The hacksaw blade broke. He suggested I take it back and tell the shop it was not fit for purpose. I didn't and managed to finish the job with a broken part of the blade. Luckily it was not a high security lock!

Back in hospital again after another big pain flare. Going to stay in now and get the operation to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerves and pin the vertebrae. If it gets done in the next week, I should be back on the bike in early March when the weather will be warmer (hopefully).

My gripe is snow / ice rendering the road to town impassable. Looks like gritting was not effective last night.

Hope all goes well Craig. Off tomorrow to a hospital north of Chesterfield for the wife to see a consultant re getting her knee replaced. Paying for it for the same reason as Craig hopes to get back on the bike by March. We hopefully have at least 10 years of active life left together. Get it done soon, if all goes well, then we may have an active summer. Its not how things should be, and private health treatment is something we fundamentally disagree with, but it is what it is.
I agree, you shouldn't have to pay for it, but what price do you put on the pain and suffering waiting for NHS treatment. It's all part of the Tory plan to dismantle the NHS.

A common gripe - insurance!
Just had my renewal notice for home insurance and it had DOUBLED in price from last year!!! WTF? Time for cost comparisons, but with all the news about premiums going up I'm not hopeful.

Similar story here. Home insurance doubled in price. Car insurance up from £135 to £220. In both cases, I managed to get much better prices by going through the comparison sites.
Bike insurance renewal is due next month. I can't wait to see what joy that brings.
Just renewed my house insurance with Aviva, the price had gone up about 25% which from what I read isn't bad at all. I've too much stuff on at the moment to be bothered shopping around. Having said that, the T&C's are pretty good compared to a lot, the devil is always in the small print with insurance, so I'm not too concerned anyway.
Watch out for T&C's, a friend had a water leak (frozen/thawed pipe) last year and discovered/realised he was significantly under-insured so ended up getting a reduced payout even after lots of haggling and ombudsman involvement etc..
Similar story for me too. Seems that 25-30% uplift is typical.:smt010
Wife's car insurance was nearly 30% up on renewal a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully tolerable in £s because we're old etc. (Still checked comparison sites but they were all coming up as more expensive still.)
Son's renewal has just landed and he's up more than £200 (over 35%) compared to last year. One of this weekend's tasks is to help with seeing if we can improve the situation - oh the joy!
Not looking forward to house and bike renewals coming in later in the year.:smt096

There is a large number of people who should be going to prison for this, and it certainly shouldn't have been postmasters.
My best friend and ex-roommate in the US passed away this morning. Talmage Bartlett came into my life after my divorce when I needed a roommate and I came to rely on his judgement. He had an uncanny ability to read people and within minutes of talking to them could deduce their motivations which helped enormously in dealing with my ex wife. The only times his perception let him down was in his personal relationships - he was gay and consistently picked awful people that even I could see were not good news.
He had a photographic memory and he described it as a video tape that he could rewind and playback. It was offputting when he could recount what you'd told him word for word. He could read a manual once and then tell you what to do without any mistakes. He was the smartest person I have ever met.
Fortunately for the rest of us he was a procrastinator and lazy otherwise he'd be ruling the world. He often said he felt he was living amongst aliens because people couldn't see the truth of what they wanted and how to get it. I will miss him. :(

My garage dehumidifier has bitten the dust with a C1 error (overheat). The standard response from Meaco is to clean the filter but I dismantled the machine and it's not a dirt issue. I'm waiting to see how much Meaco charge for a repair versus buying an Ebac 2250e (with a 4 yr warranty if you buy it direct @ £250). The Ebac is made in Durham, the Meaco (a UK company) DD8L (Zambezi) is made in China.
There is a 3rd option but it's twice the price. An Ecor Dryfan - the problem I'd have (other than price) is that they vent warm wet air so I'd need to drill a hole in my concrete garage to vent outside. The other dehumidifiers have a condensor and a waste tank and/or can be plumbed in.
It's funny, there was a reddit post on why do boomers keep boxes that held equipment. Guilty as charged, I kept the Meaco box. Maybe it's just cynicism and I expect a product to go wrong...
edit: I have let down boomers everywhere. I have the Meaco fan box but not the Meaco dehumidifier box. The shame...

'buying an Ebac 2250e (with a 4 yr warranty if you buy it direct @ £250). The Ebac is made in Durham, the Meaco (a UK company) DD8L (Zambezi) is made in China'.
I had a few Ebac in the past ( 4 in total ), and non of them lasted over 3 years ( I thought that was normal, but got another one because they were made in UK ), and quickly went noisy. The last one i had cost over £250 with a 2 year warranty and boasted 'it learns your lifestyle and automatically switches on and off' the thing did not even have a humidity display. As for the two year warranty it failed about a week after it expired ( a common thing apparently, the controls just fail and the answer is a new control board ). Ebac did not want to know and offered me a £100 fix, that is when I got a MeacoDry ABC 20L which is much quieter, ( has a centrifugal fan ) has a nice digital humidity display and you can actually adjust to the humidity you want.... 4 years + later still going strong and as quiet as when it was new. I had a series of UK made cars that were not so good, but got them because they were made here, Then I got a Honda Civic and never looked back...
Thanks @SV650Rules - I hadn't realised when I posted that Ebac were compressor dehumidifiers and I need a dessicant type for its lower temperature functionality.
Meaco are awful to deal with though. My Meaco DD8L Zambezi has worked well till now (3+ years) but when I try and get it repaired by Meaco they refuse unless I have the original receipt/invoice. This isn't a warranty claim, I would be paying for the repair.
I have just got off the phone with them and just couldn't understand why they won't repair my machine at my cost. The reason given was shortage of parts - I asked if they have stopped making them - no, but they keep changing parts within the machine that are not backwards compatible.
I'm now torn. There's an online channel that is a primary agent for Meaco (loveshoppingdirect) and they are offering a 3 year warranty on a lesser Meaco model (that would still work for me) on the other hand dealing with Meaco customer service is pushing me to look elsewhere.
I've emailed loveshoppingdirect (from whom I bought my Meaco) and paypal to see if I can get an invoice but I'm not holding out much hope.

My Gripe is having to deal with 02. I renewed my Virgin broadband and the only way to get a good deal was through their Volt bundle which comes with an 02 SIM card. So I get the SIM and try and log into the My 02 app and it says the account is not activated. I try their virtual assistant and it directed me to use the 02 app, which I can't log into. I went into an 02 store who said they can see the account but can't help me from store level. My gripe is that I normally buy my batteries from Tayna, but a few years ago when i needed a new Yuasa YT12A-BS AGM battery for my AL7. Tayna were out of stock and could not give me a date when new stock would arrive ( probably covid affecting the supply chain ). I found the right battery at MDS and ordered one ( never used MDS before, but Tayna are always great to deal with and very quick delivery ), when it arrived there was acid in packaging acid on the battery. I emailed a photo to MDS and a guy rang me back saying that they bulk fill the batteries and that was just some splashing ( they obviously do not wipe batteries down before shipping ) and if I had problems with the battery they would replace it. Now less than 3 years later the battery was not able to achieve 'green' on my smart charger, so I measured battery voltage at 10.5 volts.... Every one of the Yuasa batteries I have ever had on bikes and cars has lasted at least 5 years, and I replace batteries at 5 years as a rule. Now because the guy phoned me back rather than email I have no record of our conversation about replacing the battery which only get 12 months warranty anyway... I feel I have been stiffed by MDS...

Try a claim citing Sale of Goods Act "not fit for purpose" reasoning. They are statutory rights and warranty period is not necessarily relevant.
If you have a proof of sale, less than 3 years does seem low for average battery life. (Like you say batteries typically last longer. More anecdotes: The original Yuasa I had on my VFR lasted over 10 years and the batteries in our current SVs are probably getting on for 5 years+ too. I bet there's some industry statistics on the web somewhere.)
You may have to argue a bit but if you're going to have to replace the battery anyway what have you got to lose? Even if just to send an email to test the waters before letting them know you'll never buy from them again, or recommend them to anyone if their first response is 'No way'. You never know, maybe they'll have some semblance of decent after sales and honour the phone promise?
The Meaco dehumidifier story last chapter aka "what is wrong with UK customer service".
After emailing PayPal and loveshopping direct and finding the original dispatch note I approach Meaco again since I can prove I didn't buy the dehumidifier on an auction site. They send me the Out of Warranty Terms and Conditions (Huh?)
"#4 if the product has been opened by a non-Meaco technician then Meaco will not work on the product."
Since Meaco tell you that a C1 error is caused by overheating and, most likely, dirt build up I stripped the machine to clean it so no repairs for me. To re-iterate: I would be paying for the repair.
In the US a customer is considered an asset that helps profitability, I feel in the UK we are treated like an annoyance.

Seeker, this country ( and many other western countries ) have lost at least a generation of people who know how to fix things. This country will not be able to expand its manufacturing sector even if the silly politicians wanted to ( they seem very 'anti-manufacturing' ), there is a truly massive skills shortage in the 'technicians' sector' - the ones able to keep things working. Sure they are trying to bring apprenticeships back, but people can only get apprenticeships with hairdressers or plumbers nowadays.

I'd agree to an extent, but the denial of warranty claims if the thing is opened is what puts many people off trying. Now they don't even know how. Added to this is spares not being readily available to fix stuff.

Got in touch with MDS and their flippant reply was 'well they obviously don't make them like they used to' - and offered me a tenner off a replacement - but when I checked their price is the same as Halfords anyway ( and Halfords have stock which MDS do not ) - I just said they had shipped me a dodgy battery covered with acid once and I was not willing to trust them again... I checked the battery at Tayna as well, their price almost £60 but by the time you add on delivery costs it it is almost the Halfords price, but Tayna do not have stock either. I know Halfrauds used to sell Yuasa batteries labelled as Halfords, so they must have had a relationship with Yuasa, maybe still do. MDS offer 'free' delivery in mainland UK, but charge pretty much the same price as Halfrauds.

Funny that Tayna do not have stock of that Yuasa battery either, but their price once you add shipping is approaching Halfords anyway..
That's a shame. But at least we now know of another supplier that's perhaps best to avoid. Mental note made :)
Meaco, the final chapter in my dehumidifier story. I received an email from them today saying they don't sell parts to the public (I wanted to buy a regen fan motor). So they wouldn't look at my machine because I'd stripped it to clean it and once I got off my backside and found the problem they wouldn't sell me a part. I told them they seem to have lost the "customer" aspect of customer service.
I have found a motor but it's of poorer quality than the one that was fitted (didn't think that was possible). I have it running on the bench to see if it will last for an hour (it shouldn't run that long in normal operation). The windings are already at 79°C though after 30 mins.

The zip on my jacket broke ... and I went onto the riding gear forum to report it on the original thread, and the thread has gone. I guess six years is a reasonable time for a jacket to last, but it feels like yesterday. Jackets are really expensive now!

Zip should be replaceable by any competent repairer. (If you can find one )
And definitely cheaper than a new jacket - you're right about the cost of those!

I don't even know where to start with finding someone to repair a zip ... apart from youtube, which would likely end in a mess.
Have a look for a shop that does alterations or leather repairs.

got new pillows by chance?
fell out of bed sleeping and climbed back in without wakening up.
i sometimes startle myself during a dream. so maybe you done that violently in fear of being hurt.
one of my friends had a dream of crashing his bike on the ballachulish bridge having never seen it in his life. it was not until he went across it years later that he remembered his dream.. its really strange how the mind works.
My wife thinks it was from gardening the day before. My back was certainly sore when I'd finished but I had no aches when I went to bed. I was up in the middle of the night too helping Mrs Admin to go the loo and I was fine then. It was probably the monster under the bed that clobbered me.
As for your friend, he must have had a major deja Vue moment when he crossed that bridge. I've had a few moments like that. Very odd.

Just renewed my M/C insurance. Got the reminder off Hastings ( I never have insurance on auto-renewal=rip-off )
Pretty much same price as last year but still had a look at a comparison site. Could have got it a few quid cheaper but for convenience thought I'd stick with Hastings so rang them up. Gave up after being on hold over 40 mins whilst watching TV.
Went out to do a bit of shopping and tried again later. Gave up after 20 mins plus.
Went on ,"Meercat" and found a ,"One Call" deal for a pound cheaper AND free basic breakdown cover so saved me £40/50 squids so bought that.
Hastings can kiss my hairy hoop :D
Threadlock. If there's a world shortage of threadlock it's because Suzuki used it all on my GSX passenger footrests. :x
My 2012 Triumph Speedmaster - parts replaced in the last six months or so:
1. Leaking oil cooler
2. Thermostat for above
3. Worn/old clutch plates & springs, and associated crankcase gaskets
4. Air filter
5. Oil filter
6. Headstock bearings
7. Rocker box cover plate gasket
8. Spark plugs
9. Rotten/rusty rear fender/mudguard
10. Rusty (with a hole in the underside) swinging arm
11. Oil cooler feed pipework.
plus service and MOT.
It's been an expensive year for the trumpet. :(
The wife is questioning what I intend doing with the bike next year when I retire...
That's quite a list. I assume the hole in the swingarm was a drain or did it rust through?
Sent from my SM-T510 using Tapatalk
It rusted through. Fortunately I’d managed to get a nearly new replacement from eBay for about £90.

Looking at that lot I take it that it likes the 'sea air'
Yes Red, that's what Im thinking. It did also get a dip in some water fom the Adriatic when I was trying to make my escape from the coast during a particularly heavy downpour. Intentions are next year strip it right down so I can get to the frame to remove rusty areas, maybe get it powder coated along with the wheels and spend my time putting it back together. Maybe do my own respray too.
Just asked Lycamobile for a PAC code. I've had three faults in the past month and I'm tired of their fault reporting procedure.
So many things in life these days relies on having a reliable phone service, such as two factor authentication for banking etc.
My current phone has two SIM slots so I'll be adding a second number to my phone but running on different network to SIM 1.
Also I don't have a landline any more.

I've been testing a Lyca Sim as a spare/alternate for my GiffGaff account. I won't be renewing the monthly deal when it runs out :/
I've been with GiffGaff years and even though there are bigger data deals etc I make a tidy bit of ,"Pay-Back" helping on their support forum, so much so I've not paid for my phone Network since joining them and the O2 they run on in my area is robust ;-)
I've not had a landline since around 2010 :O
I use my phone as my Broadband and Hotspot to my Laptop like now. My old TV doesn't do Wi-Fi so I use an HDMI cable to me TV from my Laptop if I want to use Iplayer or similar but stick to SD not HD so as to use less data and avoid buffering :)

We are on Tesco mobile as well, it runs on O2 and O2 just merged with Virgin media
Yeah I'd seen that. The only way I could get a good deal on my broadband was to take their Volt deal with an O2 SIM I'll never use

Bloody zip on my Dainese leather jacket gave out when I tried to do it up at Tesco. Had to ride home with a big gap in it. Looks like I'm going to have to stump up to get the zip replaced. :smt022

Decided it was high time to give Hugh a wash and polish. Have not given him a clean so far this year so it was high time. Went for a spin this afternoon and found a five mile stretch of the A40 has just been surfaced, as I came down a slip road on to it with no way of turning back. Got showered in gravel several times as barstewards ignored the 20mph and no overtaking signs, but, worse, the whole bike is now covered in dust! It's near enough booze o'clock so let the self commiserations begin.
Just downloaded my latest credit card statement and discovered loads of dodgy transactions in the last couple of days. So on the phone to my card issuer to take the appropriate action. They were very good and were surprised that they didn't pick up these transactions. Anyhow card blocked and money refunded.
I learnt that these transactions were all Web based and none of them were "verified by visa". Apparently it's down to the merchant whether they want VbyV probably because its a cost to them.
No idea how my card details were picked up. I suspect it was while we were away and using hotel WiFi.

Glad you got your money back and got onto it fast. I'm always fearful of this but in saying that I get instant messages when any transaction happens on any of my cards. Do your banking apps allow this ?

Do your banking apps allow this ?No my banking app doesn't alert me, it's a bit basic. If I use the card with Google wallet then Google does.
To be fair my card supplier has always been very good when it comes to security and they have called me in the past if I've been paying for a large item which they think is suspicious.
I regularly check my activity via the app and hadn't noticed these transactions as they all happened in the last couple of days.

Possibly. The VFR was part ex'd for a new Transalp last June. The shop sold the VFR very quickly but I've not heard since.

I wonder if Kings will sell Hugh as quickly after he went in px last week for Bullseye. He's up on their website now - bafflingly they did not clean him before taking the pics... You'd have thought they'd have wiped the bugs off the screen or cleaned the dirt splashes off the lower paintwork. Ah well.

I'm super wary of this after being caught out in Germany many years ago, when my then wife's card was stolen by deception. By the time I got the next bill through the post it was over £6k when I expected about £400!! Access (remember them?) were very good and had already noted the fraudulent transactions were after when I cancelled my card. Apparently they were letting the card be used so German police could track a gang who were using stolen cards.
The bill was still a massive shock though!
I do remember Access. That was our first credit card too (your flexible friend).

You seem to be having an up and down week Bibs.
I received an email this evening informing me that my PayPal transaction to buy $524.71 of bitcoin had been flagged by PayPal as an unauthorised transaction and I had to call a number supplied within 12 hours to get the money refunded. I hadn't tried to buy bitcoins.
After checking my PayPal account activity that nothing had been taken, I forwarded the email to their "phishing" dept, I also forwarded it to my bank. PayPal's documentation said that any of their emails will address you by name (or business) whereas this one just said "Dear" with nothing else. I also googled the number supplied (a US phone number) and it didn't match any of the PayPal numbers. I changed my PayPal log pwd just in case but I don't think it was necessary. I have attached the alleged PayPal missive.
It raised my blood pressure for a while.

Flip is it cold here today! I heard the familiar whiring of the water pump in the airing cupboard this afternoon so the heating tried to come on. I say tried, as we have no gas at the moment. Cadent has shut down the whole road while they put in a liner to the mains pipes. It's gone 19:30 and they're still out there so fingers crossed we get it back later today.
Adding to the list of things not to do:
Do not rip off a finger nail.
I tripped and ripped off my right little finger nail and damaged the one next to it. Plus I have recently started blood thinners so I'm dripping blood everywhere. Did I mention the pain? Yeah, it hurts.
Ouch. Did that myself a few years back. The nail grew back eventually but it now looks like one of those crinkly crisps.
