Autoglass finally turned up and replaced my screen. Bear in mind I live in Buckinghamshire - the guy that showed up to fix it is based in Kent! The local branch is swamped and the relief team for the whole of the southern counties is based in Maidstone. Nice chap - says he's on the road in hotels five days a week, every week of the year. He's off back home tomorrow and everyone he's met in this neck of the woods this week has said they've been waiting over three weeks, just like me. They need more staff!!!!
It would be in SmileOTD but I still think they're hopeless. Even though they did waive my excess because of their incompetence.

Every version of annual reporting has been completely pointless, complete waste of time, never resolved getting rid of the useless feckers, and our mob pay so much to outside companies for these systems.

One of the best things about being an indie contractor is that I can do my own mid- and end-of-year reviews on myself. Every time I get a fantastic rating and win employee of the year every year without fail. Fantastic.
As most of my perm career up to the tipping point was in large US IT companies you can all imagine how many reviews of different flavours I had to endure... Don't miss them one little bit and you have my sympathies.

Well same here, although current employer is large French IT company. I was recently contacted about a contract and I was tempted to re-join the independent ranks, but as is normal for these roles the commute was too far and staying away from home 4 nights a week does not appeal.

I hear that...I've taken quite the pause with contracting simply because I wanted to find local work and have failed...luckily I have the "company funds" to maintain my income in the mean time but time is running out....I'll be hotel bound soon enough....

Yeah, being Norwich based definitely means I have to travel, unless I am lucky to land a job in the city of which there aren't many to speak of...
It's been 3 months for me too and I've just pulled my back last week, so I can't really jump on the bike and work in a chair all day right now either; I blame getting busy too much DIY whilst off! Still the loft is now fully boarded up, the garden is looking useable again and the logs are all chopped ready for the winter..
It's strange how too much time off gets at you though, even with lovely sunny days. Most would think we're lucky to be able to take time outs but I now have this daily nagging feeling about not working (we're bred to work aye!) and it can't be healthy...

The vegetarian animals of the world (also known as prey) have to spend every daylight hour eating their low nutrient food, and then all hours of darkness chewing it over and over again until their teeth wear out and they die. The omnivores / meat eaters (otherwise known as predators) can happily eat once a day or less, takes an hour at most, and spend the time doing what they like (sunbathing or having fun). The world does need creatures that can eat vegetable matter and turn it into high grade food for the others, but some creatures that can eat meat chose to eat lower grade food, don't ask me why.
but some creatures that can eat meat chose to eat lower grade food, don't ask me why.
Well there's a number of reasons why an intelligent species would choose not to eat meat.
No death.
No cruelty.
Greater energy efficiency. Every level of the trophic pyramid consumes energy.
Therefore greater theoretical total human population of the world before running out of resources.
Also, there's the point that with food technology as it stands today, there's no health benefit to eating meat.
So in short if you're choosing to eat meat, you're choosing to harvest animal flesh simply because it tastes good.
For the vegetarians amongst us, it is theoretically possible to produce milk and eggs ethically. However it doesn't happen in the industry as it is today.

If we are going down the efficiency route, we should all eat insects then, they are the most efficient / sustainable way of producing protein and fat (and quite a bit of roughage as well in some of them), fungus is also good as it will live on any old rubbish.
All the more hamburgers and sausages for us carnivores then........ and it tastes better than dried locusts or mealworms.
Natures favourite way way of controlling population is by the food supply available (and also disease when things get too crowded), humans are going against the tide by manipulating the food supply just so that Africans don't need to use contraception, in the meantime the extra bodies just continue to degrade the planet and steal habitat from the other creatures we share it with. Typical human arrogance, but it is just delaying the inevitable crash a by few more years..... then cockroaches and ants will inherit what is left of the Earth.

By a lot more years.
Soya and other legumes and some fungi are protein rich and are better than insects. Trophic pyramid still applies whatever method you use.
Unfortunately most of the animals you share your habitat with are in fact farmed. The percentage of wild mammal biomass on the entire planet is somewhat worryingly low. The most energy efficient use of land is to grow plants to eat.
There's also the argument of greenhouse gases produced by cows, but frankly I'm not sure vegans produce much less :-?

With hindsight it would have been better (and quicker) to buy the Ni-MH and a new charger... but I didn't.
Or just buy a new li-ion based cordless drill and be done with it, chances are if what you got is that old you can't find replacement batteries something else will go wrong with it soon enough. As an example a cheap non brand name hammer action drill with 13mm chuck and 2 X 1.5ah batteries will set you back £55: https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p45009

I use my 20 year old Bosch corded hammer drill loads more than my much newer dewalt cordless li-ion drill, the hammer action and power on the corded drill much better. Cordless are ok away from home or where no power sockets, but at home never too far from a 13amp socket. And remember "If it has t!ts, tyres or a battery it is going to give you problem". Li-ion much better than nicad or ni-mh for life and keeping their charge when not used for a while.
And remember "If it has t!ts, tyres or a battery it is going to give you problem"

Another biker decided to change lanes right in front of me this morning, forcing me on to the central reservation to avoid them. They didn't bother checking before they moved, didn't acknowledge my horn blowing. They just kept going.

They were on an MV and in full leathers with flash back pack and chin mount go pro. All the gear, but no idea. Rode like they were on a moped.
Every mode of transport has its idiots. The biggest moaners are cyclists and some of them are complete twits. You know how they complain about cars passing too close, well that rule doesn't apply to them when passing other cyclist. I regularly get this as I cycle to work and it makes me jump as unlike a car you don't hear them coming.

Now bung in autonomous vehicles which could be programmed to send and/or archive footage automatically and you've got a fleet of mobile traffic cameras. Eyes everywhere.
However the police and CPS still won't have the manpower to process every transgression and I predict it'll get totally ignored unless it's a serious "incident" - which isn't really preventing accidents is it?

It twists and turns quite a bit plus there are cars parked outside houses to make it even trickier. Most people would be cautious and keep to about 20mph but on this occasion Mr Insignia though it was okay to do 40 around a left hand blind bend and overtake a parked car too just as I was coming in the other direction. Either this, or it's because there are no consequences.anymore. If you crash it won't hurt much, thanks to all the tech in cars.
No prosecutions that mean much now.
Even if you kill someone, it's hard to get sent down these days.
So what does it matter, just a bit of inconvenience, with a good solicitor, you'll escape most charges, except drink/drug driving, as the evidence stands up.

Very disturbing report in our local paper (Shropshire Star) last Saturday about a car that swerved onto the wrong side of the road and killed a 67 year old motorbike rider. Happened at Aberhosan, Machynlleth in May last year, the car driver got a two year ban and 27 week suspended jail sentence, the car drivers solicitor said 'he was very ill and is wracked with guilt' - yeah maybe, but the totally innocent motorbike rider was killed instantly.
When I bought my AL7, the owner and I talked about caring for a parent with dementia, my Dad had been diagnosed with mixed dementia (Alzheimer's and vascular). Peter, the owner, asked if I'd picked out a care home because there would come a time when I would not be able to cope. That time arrived today.
I miss my Dad but the person that I have put into a care home was not my Dad, I lost him to dementia over 3 years ago and I hate what that disease has done to the man that flew P47 Thunderbolts in the war, worked hard and conscientiously all his life and only admitted at the age of 75, that he never really liked his job but he had responsibilities to his family. Life isn't fair but this disease is brutal.
Here's a grainy pic of Dad's P47:

This is my Dad in younger, happier times:
https://image.ibb.co/cueWrd/Me.png
The RAF taught him to fly in South Africa, when he was learning aerobatics, he looped but encountered some rough turbulence and thought he'd screwed up. His instructor laughed - his loop was so accurate he'd flown through his own slipstream which is unusual - the only "boastful" story my Dad ever told me.My friend is going through the same with his father. Like you he said the man in the home is not the man he remembers and loved. Life is hard.

Been there done that Seeker, although you've had it tough for 3 years. My mum was taken into care after fracturing her hip, which accelerated her dementia to the point she wasn't my mum anymore, well not the person I could have a rational conversation with.
However it is for the best, we couldn't have cared for her like the care home staff did for my mum for the last 7 months of her life. If you're happy with the home, then that's a load of stress off you. I viewed 3 and the last one was my choice.

Same here, mum has Picks disease, a rare form of dementia. And it can be passed on as it's caused by a faulty gene. So as will as dealing with her illness, I'm getting treated to see if I'll develop it too, and it usually comes on right about the age I am now.

Running definitely helps Trev, hard physical activity generally too. Running with Mabel has been one of the things keeping me on a slightly more even keel for a while now. Unfortunately at the time that last bout came to kick me I had a minor heel problem and I know that if I'd run I would have had to wait even longer for it to sort itself. Running early tomorrow morning with Mabel and a running buddy though which should help to clear the head a little.

Once you've entered details into one of the compare sites it just needs a tweak next year to add one more year onto some details, I normally get my current insurer to beat the quotes or get very close...doesn't take that long....never accept renewals, it's throwing money away

Once you've entered details into one of the compare sites it just needs a tweak next year to add one more year onto some details, I normally get my current insurer to beat the quotes or get very close...doesn't take that long....never accept renewals, it's throwing money away
I switched and saved £45 with a lower compulsory excess, too. I've never found the comparison sites that useful as the detailed quotes are always so different - but maybe that's because I have some odd exceptions, like my garage is in a different postcode to my house.

I've had a very up and down week (up's are in the smile thread).
Went to see my speach and swallowing therapist who watched me live on XRay try and swallow. She offers little hope it's ever going to happen.
Been out on the bike three days wearing different helmets and in pain with them all after about 20 miles, I bloody hate the "new" shape of my head.

The thought had crossed my mind. I'm going to try an open face lid. Cannot get by as it's proper pain rather than discomfort.
No ecxuse for not visiting you now;)
not good news Malc :-(
still love ya even if you do have a weird shaped head :-)

Migraine, I know I moan about these regularly but I get them regularly. This month I've taken the beta blockers, HRT and riboflavin every day without fail. These are meant to prevent the migraines. Yet I'm going into my third day of headache. All the meds may make it less severe but they don't actually stop them. So I take migraine treatment which makes me tired, with an almost hungover feeling. [emoji20]
I might have a dig around in the garage later for the hand drill, give DIY trepanning a go. If that works I can see if I could then get the chisel out and try to reshape LOM's head so it'll for comfortably into a helmet.

Yeah but if you're seeing double cos you've got a massive migraine, they kind of merge.

Are the tablets dehydrating you?. I ask as I never feel thirsty and if I forget to take water then I feel tired, hungover and light headed.

Malc, is the pain caused at specific points on your skull?
When I worked with Cromwell helmets ( 55 years ago !) they used a 'stretcher' to customise the fit for me. Maybe one of those would help?

The problem is that I have no jaw bone on my left. what you see is my Pec Major muscle from my chest ( it's still attached to my chest). When this is moved to the right by the lid it puts pressure on the joint at the top of the right jaw bone joint, hence the pain. When I sit at home with the lid on it's merely discomfort, but on the Van Van at a massive 55mph it hurts.

I'm trying to remember to drink more water as that's quite possible. My migraines are hormonal so I get 1 a month. Day 1, pain and nausea as I wake. Day 2, OK until mid morning, then same again. Day 3, easier but still lurking, days 5 and 6, really tired and washed out. But I should quit moaning as compared to what you are going through mine is insignificant.
Silly question perhaps, but would a helmet this shape be better?

Nah moaning's quite theraputic sometimes ( well that's what the wife says when she moans) Anyway think of the alternative, the dreaded "change".

Maybe. I'm off down to Newcastle today to try a few open face helmets on today. I've got tickets for the BSB round at knockhill this weekend and really want to got tomorrow.

My son gets migraines and says the beta blockers make him feel 'odd.' He says he has to remember to drink more and finds that sugary drinks help. (Just don't get me started about tax on sugary drinks or shops that refuse to sell them to under 16s - the Consultant advises the drinks and the alternative is a hemiplegic lad on the floor wanting to cut his head off. I'd like to see a Tesco store manager deal with that one!)
Trying to drink more for the pills is hard enough without having to add extra for hot weather too. GWS LPH.
LP.. get off the beta blockers. they are nasty nasty things. what they dont tell you is that yes they lower blood pressure which can be a good thing for those that need it but at the same time they can make your blood pressure go sky rocketing at the flick of a switch. even the slightest bit of "stress" can have people going off their nuts.
the average person should be replenishing the amount of blood in their body (around 8 pints) with the same of water every day. in hot weather you must also take a little more extra salt in your diet.
a loooot of people suffer from dehydration and they dont even know it. its very common. in worst cases it can give you bladder infections which cause you to go literally nuts.
what they really dont want to tell you about migraines is that they can be caused by pressure from enlarged blood vessels in the brain.
i know three people (all female) who suffered from migraines and the three of them have had brain haemorrhages. common symptoms in all three were an elevated euphoria.

My wife used to get migraines after visiting the cinema when we lived in SA, thought it was the flickering of the screen, turned out to be the large glass of fresh orange juice she only used to drink at the cinema.
You are right Bibio that a lot of people are dehydrated and don't know it, in hot weather when you stop sweating is a danger sign, and a lot of the problems with confusion and health problems in older people (who think 3 cups of tea a day is enough) is down to lack of fluids. One thing is tea and coffee can irritate the bladder and make people want to have a pee more often but only small ones, what you find when you drink water is that when your bladder tells you you need to take action it is normally pretty full and well worth a visit to the loo, but you can normally delay it a bit before it gets real urgent because the bladder will fill up but is not 'irritated'. I am sure the sensitive bladder advertised so often on TV and elsewhere could be cured by drinking more water and less tea and coffee.

I think tea and coffee are Diuretics which help the body to lose fluids. So the wrong thing to drink if you're dehydrated.

The Metric System!
I liked the metric system until it came to buying fence panels; I need 6' x 3' panels and there are a lot of vendors. Unfortunately, there are vendors selling panels listed as 6 foot which are 1800mm instead of 1828mm. You can find many good looking 1800mm panels and only a few good looking 1828 panels. I was hoping to find panels that look the same on both sides but, so far, the only ones that meet all the criteria are £70 each.
I remember trying to buy either 10mm or 3/8" bolts in the 90s (I can't remember which) and the packets from B&Q (I think) had both listed with no clue as to what they actually were ...
My gripe.

The other half has suffered from monthly migraines for years and each would put her out of action for around 3 days with a couple of days either side of feeling terrible. She's tried a few different meds etc including beta blockers but to no avail with actually stopping the migraines. She has also tried quite a few migraine treatments as stopping them from happening wasn't working.
The stuff she's been using for the last few years is Sumitriptan, if she takes one soon as she feels a migraine coming and then has a sleep it seems to stop it in its tracks.
She still feels a bit rough for a day after but she can function normally (well normally for her ;))
