I'm sure there's a market for a pop up Christmas tree that works like an umbrella. It would have decorations and lights already installed. Just pop up and plug-in. Simples.

I think the SC should have stayed out until the end, Hamilton was 12 sec in front at the time of the incident, so wouldn't have been caught by Verstappen on the tyres he was on at the time.

Does seem like a monumental **** up

12 seconds ! That makes it even more unfair. I hope they get the decision overturned.

Following on from Gary's post, I had a nice spin out to the Raven caff near Whitchurch yesterday. Weather was dry and 10 celsius, roads were intermittently damp from overnight fog. Despite being spotless before I set off, my SV was still the muckiest of the 5 or 6 bikes at the caff.

Why do SVs get dirtier than any other bike on the road?

its due to them being narrow. the front wheel spray gets to cover more than an IL4.

I have come to the conclusion that most people are to unwilling to deal with, or afraid of the short(er) term disruption which has now become necessary in order to deal with the far greater long term chaos and breakdown facing us all.

If we'd dealt with it over the preceding decades, it would have been uncomfortable but do-able. Now, it's going to effing hurt.

we have been doing the same old dance since the 70's.. nothing has changed apart from technology and social media..... we have faced the same sh!t decade after decade. each crisis we faced got swept under the rug due to greed. the rug now has a huge lump under it but the edges are glued down... there is nothing that can be done.

we all die so why worry... be happy.. while your hear.

Don't they leave parcel in a 'safe' place or with a neighbour ? That's what they do around here. I have often accepted a parcel for neighbours and vice versa, or picked up parcel from 'safe 'place if nobody was in when parcel was delivered.

Went to the garage this morning to get something and found a DPD card half way down the drive. No boxes ticked, nothing in the comments field. Just in case, I had a look in the recycling box near the front door and sure enough there was a parcel sitting in there. Thanks DPD - at least one of us has been in the last three days and you didn't bother knocking or ringing the bell, and you couldn't even post your card through the letter box right beside as you dumped the parcel...

its that time of year for xmas cards. posties are only allowed to carry so much weight which a large majority of it is spam mail. spam mail is more important to the royal mail as they get revenue from it.. so stuff your letters is their attitude.

It may not be right for you, but for me it's been a revelation - a few years ago I got a Monzo account for travel (they don't charge for foreign exchange transactions). You literally do everything through the app, and I've never had to speak to anyone about it.

I still have my Natwest account, but have a standing order to transfer "spending" money over to Monzo each month, so I use it almost all the time.

If you have one of their paid accounts (I don't ... yet) you can also create virtual card numbers to use online so you can give a different card number to each site and set limits on them.

Anyway, here ends the advert for Monzo. :-)

I got confused by the press reports I scanned. All it seemed to suggest was that a Chinese woman with connections was making donations to MPs etc., presumably seeking to get information/influence in return.

So what makes that so threateningly different to the motivations of all the other party donors? Why does this one suddenly shake the foundations of our system? Isn't it just the chinese variant of the old "cash for questions" scandal? (Putting aside what the security service may not be disclosing, of course.)

My new towbar cycle carrier arrived and when I went to fit it... towbar said no. Flip.

My car has a fixed flange standard towball and Thule carriers, I now know, need a longer stem. The website I bought the carrier from said it fits all bolt on (ie flange type) balls which is clearly wrong. Thankfully, after a bit of Googling, I've found I need to swap to an Al-ko compatible fitting and everything should fit.

I feel a snotty email to Roofbox.co.uk coming on.

The Furlough payments scheme and other 'covid' schemes was always going to have fraudsters rubbing their hands, more open to fraud than even postal voting. The government writes off large sums all the time, they could not make ends meet on the average household budget. The government has no money, they only have what they extort by legal means out of the population, those eye watering sums mean nothing to them, and it is not only one party that does it, Liebore are more culpable than most for waste.

Bibio

more to the point.. if thats what the scammers got then how much did the whole furlough and other schemes cost the tax payer.

its all relative as the gov get 60+% back in various vat and duty especially if you drive a car or smoke or drink. add to that people are taxed at source before they even spend anything. if you happen to be a high earner then its even worse.

All too easily. Even if it is less than 0.5% of the national annual revenue, it's still a staggering sum and I agree a little more care would be appropriate.

A quick glance at Wikipedia tells me that since 1998 there've only been three years when the budgets balanced or forecast a (very small) surplus. Most years see a dramatic deficit (typically 5-10% of total expenditure), irrespective of 'colour' of government. Seems no-one is really bothered about balancing the books.

I bought a new house for a little over 1 years salary - and £7100 was about average UK money - I doubt that applies anywhere in the UK now. So, that was good. Incidentally, I sold the house for £13250 18 months later.

Mortgage rates were painful.

A good step on to the housing ladder then.
I bought my first house for about £21000 in 1985 but I can't remember what my salary was then .Mortgage rates would have been quite high then I think. The endowment mortgage had a shortfall of course towards the end of the term, not the surplus the building society manager implied when we took it
out ! But can't complain, house prices have gone up for those lucky enough to own one. Not so good for first time buyers of course.

Road conditions were a bit odd yesterday. No sign of any frost or ice near my home (about 3miles from Shrewsbury) just wet and dirty. The affected roads were as you near the river Severn. I can only guess that there was a cold breeze running up the river banks dropping the temp to below freezing.

I'm now wondering if I need grippier tyres.

On my daily commute into the office (10 miles from SE9 to Westminster) dressed in armoured everything - Boots, gloves, jacket, jeans, lid more often than not riding at pretty much the same speed as a cyclist I often wonder just how ouchy it is when they deck the pushbike wearing 2 ounces of lycra and a dinky little skullcap (if anything at all).I think I'd do the same faced with a 10 mile trip. 90% of my journey is on cycle paths just to keep away from idiots in cars.

Really trying to support a real shop and buy running shoes. The second time I've gone out today though and got nowhere.

The first time was a few days ago. Local -ish shop... stock was sparse and I couldn't get help or attention from staff as much as I tried. The way they avoided eye contact and went out the back when I got near didn't give me confidence they'd be much help anyway. Just young kids put in charge by the manager possibly. I gave up in the end as the stock was looking such a poor selection it wasn't worth the hassle. Hour and a half going out wasted.

I gave it another shot today and at the next shop the guy who owns it refused to let me try anything on without making an appointment. I don;t know how you're meant to know this before travelling as their website doesn't say anything and there's not sign up on the shop. I tried to explain Id travelled a long round trip to visit and am not often able to get into Bristol in their opening times due to work and it's slog of a journey. Nope. No luck. Left not having even got further than the door. The owner seemed visibly ****ed off with me not knowing about their appointment policy too and didn't even suggest he cold make a future appointment for me. Another hour and half wasted and still not even managed to try anything on.

I've given up and ordered online again.. which I'll probably send back when they turn out to be the wrong size or fit.

I once made an appointment by telephone with a well known boot company in the north ,who shall remain nameless ,for a motorcycle boot fitting. When I turned up they said I should have made an appointment to have a boot fitting. I told them I had done that ! Anyway I tried out some standard sizes that weren't quite right and it seemed the 'made to fit' meant taking a boot size a bit bigger and sticking some plastic insert in the heel to make it fit.I left it at that.

Well, having taken them out of the box earlier they seem pretty good. I've now charged the batteries for the required time and given them a quick indoors and they seem very good. Although the battery time on maximum heat is said to be only 2 - 2.5 hours.... I think they'll be pretty good, but they'll get properly tested tomorrow morning at 6:30am at work out on the golf course.... I'll do my best to remember to report back.

We were in Brighton in spring last year visiting The Monkey and I noticed a cycle shop while I was waiting outside a shop (or six). It specialised in e-bikes so I went to go in and found it locked. A small note on the window said appointment only but it was empty, save for two staff members sat chatting behind the counter who both ignored me. Absolute madness so I sympathise Adam.

We have appointments at our bike shop for servicing, but anyone can call by and buy things and we do some small repairs , punctures etc on the spot too. I just can't afford another hour and a half trip to see if I can just try on shoes. I've bought online and they've arrived and worked really well for a semi off road 7k run yesterday. The same as the ones I wanted to try on at the shop, but sadly the money has gone to some faceless warehouse internet site instead of into someones pocket locally. I tried.

Today's gripe is that the Street Triple appears to have killed another battery. It's sorned at the moment and I put it on charge every couple of weeks as it killed a battery sitting for a month last winter. It's drained to 8v in the last two weeks though and isn't coming back to life. Fairly new battery too. I've had the alarm in ferry mode too as that drained the battery very quickly last year when left alarmed.

Is it a standard alarm, or after market one?

Unless you need it for insurance purposes, i'd get rid of it (if possible). They're always a source of pain waiting to go wrong the moment you need them to work.

It's declared on the insurance, so in the terms. Next time I'll work out how to remove it and not put it on the insurance quotes.

I never declare security devices with insurance company's. I am not an organised person (just ask the wife)
so the time I forget to activate will be the time I get burgled.
I uprated the house alarm and the night the garage got broken into was the night it was not alarmed. Luckily the night they came back with bolt croppers to remove the bike chains it was!

Even if you have a house alarm system and it is working, how many people activate it every night or every time they go out ?!

When I last bought bike insurance, they asked if I had a tracker - I said I did, but not a Thatcham approved one. When the certificate came through, it said I'd only be insured while I have an active Thatcham approved tracker.

So, I called up, and they removed it and it made no difference to the cost. I'm happy now, but if it makes no difference, why was it listed? I can understand it from their perspective, but it's like they're taking without giving anything back.

The problem is, some things probably do make a difference - if you say you don't even use a disk lock, I would expect them to charge you more.

Absolutely. Which is why it's not usually worth it, just incase one day you forget to lock it with what ever is declared and they wriggle out the claim/reduce payment due to it.

I have them (locks) for my peace of mind, and the Bike's protection not the reduction in an insurance premium.

Yep, I'm also in the camp of not declaring additional security but using some anyway.

Bear in mind it's a different risk being mitigated: My risk is the chance of losing my bike/vehicle/whatever, the insurer's risk is the chance of losing money (to compensate me if I claim). So I use additional security to hopefully minimise the chance that I'll ever need to call on theft insurance, but if I do have to claim then I want as little as possible in the way of getting paid. So, for insurance purposes, I try to limit my promise to removing the ignition key when leaving the bike.

I wouldn't ! The only time insurance insisted on an approved lock and chain going through the rear wheel was when a bike I had was in the garage for a while on SORN.

Why are they still going on about these bloody Downing Street Parties, I thought it had been accepted and everybody knew they broke the rules of the time .Just deal with them them as appropriate under the law and have done with it. There are much more important things to deal with now, like avoiding world war 3 when Russia invades Ukraine.

...because it is important? When a government sets rules, breaks them and then lies (or makes weak excuses) it is a serious matter even if the perceived actions seem trivial later. How can we trust whatever they say in the future?

This government (and Boris in particular) has a track record of lying and illegality, they need to be taken to task whenever they are caught. Since Sue Grey (a civil servant) was appointed by Boris to investigate, and there are already rumours that her report may only appear in redacted form - the whole investigation may be tainted. Finally, Tory MPs haven't publically accepted that any law breaking has occurred - if you listen to Dorries, Boris is still walking on water. He won a landslide majority and they are reluctant to ditch him, plus if you listen to the public, he's done a great job with Brexit and the pandemic (ha ha).

Edit: remember the fuss about evacuating dogs from Afghanistan whilst people were waiting to be evacuated? At the time, it was rumoured that Boris authorised it but, when asked, he denied it. Apparently, yet another lie - it seems to his modus operandi - always lie initially and hope you don't get discovered.

Regarding Ukraine - Raab would probably say no one could see it coming, but we have sent weapons, threated Russia with sanctions (ooooh - bet they're trembling) and generally told Putin he's been a very naughty boy.
Biden says he won't send troops, we may but they will have to buy their own bullets says Sunak and Germany wants to appease (apparently).

We can't !
I didn't say it wasn't important ,but I thought it had
been accepted the rules had been broken so fine them or whatever and have done with it. The enquiry or whatever it is will be a whitewash anyway.

My towbar-mount cycle carrier has arrived and I tried it on the car. Good job I checked all the electrics as I have no rh indicator... The left makes a very audible tick tock (I assume there is a module somewhere in the rear of the car) but the right makes no noise. Bulbs out and checked OK, the other bulbs in the cluster are all fine so my guess is duff fitting. Of course the installer cannot come and see me until next week. Grrrrrrr.... When something costs north of a Monkey I don't expect my interior trim to fall off within a day (he came back to fix it, it's fallen off again) and I perhaps foolishly expect it to work!!

Non-disclosure as police officers are complicit in the law breaking and need to 'refine' the evidence.

Bibio
28-01-22, 08:50 PM
police officers are not the law and can only guess that a crime has been committed. it takes a judge and sometimes a jury to rule that there has using evidence. evidence can be gathered and a warrant put in place for your collection by police officers.

never ever admit your guilt. politicians know this and this is why they hire briefs to fight their case.

The whole plan is now clear.

Deny anything happened, but it complied with the rules anyway.
PM/Met Commissioner consult.
Met place hands over eyes and ears and say they've seen/heard no evidence.
When it gets too compelling, PM commissions an enquiry by a civil servant to report directly to the PM, the PM thus retains ultimate control of the proceedings and reporting
Met Comm says they will only carry out an investigation if the potential perpetrators knew or should have known it was against the law (when did that apply to the rest of us?)
When it becomes clear that evidence will be "embarrasing", pass snippets to Met and they say they will now start an investigation.
This means that either they take control of proceedings, the Gray report is seriously diluted and restricted and it takes, what, a couple of years, maybe five, for the Met to come to any conclusion (plus the DPP have to get off their backsides) or if the Gray report is published and includes proper incriminating evidence then the Met claim that a fair trial would be impossible and the investigation is halted, PM claims he is exonerated.
PM keeps full control, kicks the can far far down the road with the intention of delaying anything useful coming out before the next general election.
Job done ........ for now.

Putin would be proud of it.

Don't you love non biased reporting.

Besides an MP can say anything they want whilst in the House and cannot be held accountable outside it for regardless (House sanctions are possible) but no charges outside it may be brought in any way, shape or form for what is said in the House.

The point here is that the police have requested parts of the Gray report be redacted because "it might prejudice their investigation", which is utter b*llsh*t.

The report is purely factual, which is useful evidence for the police, and would not prejudice their investigation. Furthermore, any contraventions are punished by fixed penalty notices or (at worst) a judgement by a magistrate, NOT a jury. This is because the regulations are absolute: people either did break regulations, or they didn't. So the report cannot possibly prejudice anything.

The Met intervening as they have is a purely political move to cover their own @rses, and the Governments'.

I don't agree. Yes, any factual items (such as copies of emails, statements about discussions etc) could probably be reported without problem but the Sue Gray report is not just a compilation of factual information, it's expected to draw conclusions on wrongdoing.

But drawing conclusions against criminal law from any facts established is a matter for the Courts in the legal system, not the Civil Service.

So the report can only offer an 'opinion' on whether Downing Street employees or MPs broke the laws in place at the time (just like the rest of us), although that opinion probably carries more weight due to the evidence gathered and worked through that the rest of us haven't, and presumably the Police haven't yet.

So, for example, if Sue Gray writes that in her conclusions section something like 'It was unwise to arrange these events but I don't think they went so far as to breach the Coronavirus Regulations' then it definitely prejudices what conclusion the Police can draw and what other evidence they would need to gather to conclude something different. Similarly the other way - can you imagine the media/public uproar if the Police/CPS conclude there was no grounds for prosecution if a published Civil Service internal suggests otherwise as the basis for internal disciplinary reprimands? It all changes the balance of probability point for their investigation, which matters a lot when trying to demonstrate a case can be proved "beyond reasonable doubt".

Like you, I'm suspicious that there's political murk in the mix but it's not as simple as just one or the other - there is some legitimacy to the Police request to avoid disclosure that could be prejudicial.
