From yesterday, some dodery old bloke crashed his range rover. No one seriously hurt, but the newsgasam because of it. Reporters doing the story live from the scene in the dark!

Count yourself lucky you don't get the regional news, because this story lasted 45 mins last night in my region.

It's still going on this morning :-(This winds me up too. They hardly mentioned the other driver, apparently he broke his wrist in the accident.
But having reporters standing around in the dark pointing at some broken glass is pathetic.

there is a sense of having tempted fate here. A couple of days ago there was a thread about ISPs and I mentioned that I was satisfied with Virgin overall.

Shortly thereafter my (wired) connection would blink off with a "no internet connection" message. If I looked in the Superhub3 router error log there was always this type of error:

2019-01-17 12:13:14.00 critical SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Loss of Sync;CM-MAC=40:0d:10:16:e3:7b;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:79:d2:55;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;

Best case it would blink back on after a couple of seconds worst case (only once so far) the router rebooted itself. This reboot is normal with a loss of sync. but the reboot takes about 5 minutes. (I timed it)

There are always errors in the log, though, even when it's running well, most are warnings but the critical ones worry me.

Virgin are sending someone round today.

The reboot times are insanely long for what it is. Even when it says that it is back up and running you still get huge delays for a few minutes

virgin engineers regularly "snipe" the system looking for unauthorised access, they also update the system an a regular basis.

if your internet goes down and your router is blinking its lights then DONT turn it off/on as its receiving an update. it "should" reboot after the update which can sometimes take an hour to do fully. they normally do this at night but when a critical update needs doing they will do it at anytime.

some of the problems that can happen are people logging into their router to change settings "because the read something on the net" DONT. the only thing you should change is the UN, PN and network ID and PW otherwise stay out of it unless you are qualified. people also expect to log into their router via wifi and expect it to be fast.. ermm no, if your going to do anything then use a wired connection.

something else to consider when using wireless connections. the wifi cards/dongles dont last forever and a lot of the time problems you think are the router are in fact the wifi card/dongle. this is why you should always have a spare "test" dongle.

Damn, you could get a job with them with those excuses! The delays are just as laughable whether it is wired or wireless.

When I was on the phone to them yesterday I told him I was on a wired PC and he asked if I was in the same room as the router. I said no. He told me to go in to the room with the router and see if I can access websites...

I don't think I'm a Luddite although I may not have all the gadgets I can see the use for them. I suppose I'm a borderline conservative (not politically) inasmuch as I believe: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

This preamble brings us to email - it's a functional tool which I've used for years. It should be simple to use without the need to look up how to use it. I have noticed that the major players seem to feel the need to keep modifying it to make it "better".

I didn't like it when gmail started linking incoming emails to an appropriate thread because I seem to get lost inside it and have to check dates/times to see what is going on. I understand I can change this but that brings me back to having to look up how to use it.

More recently, I tried to compose an email using gmail and noticed that the ability to attach a file had disappeared. It hadn't but it is now in stealth mode and isn't visible (wtf!), you have to hover the mouse over where the button used to be and text will appear indicating a function (the correct function if you're in the right location). This is madness. So, back into settings (have you seen how many settings there are in gmail?), if you disable "hover" then the stealthy buttons reveal themselves.

Today, I received notification that my yahoo mail account is going to be switched to the new version which, till now, I've resisted. Can't wait to see what little surprises they will spring on me.

If they want to change something give me the ability to use "strike through" on text for comedic effect, like Windows "Live Mail" had 6 years ago. I actually tried to go back to Live Mail, it was a clean and simple email program but google blocks it and I can't be bothered to look for the fix. Maybe I'm showing the first symptoms of Ludditism after all.

Maybe Gmail hates people attaching files as it takes up space on their servers, so make function harder to use....

If you want to continue being a luddite there's nothing stopping the use of an email client and connecting to Gmail using IMAP. I think even the basic email client in Windows 10 supports all the email clouds...or you could use something like Thunderbird from Firefox...

I miss better separation of email replies in gmail, trying to see what was replied to what in an email chain can be a pain...

Depends on the moisture content Bill, over here the food is a very damp cold, it really gets to you bones. When I've been skiing in places like Bulgaria and Romania, the temps are similar to yours, but it's a dry cold, and I thought it was ok. Difference is, that UK snow can be made into snowballs easily, because it's a wet snow.

Very wet snow here today. Was an odd feeling getting to the gym at 14:30 when it was grey and miserable outside (the gym is underground) only to come out an hour later to a snow covered mess. It was fun cycling home in it (not) and it pelted down for another two hours. A lot has melted already so what's left is even wetter now!

Mostly we have wet snow but occasionally we do get a dry snow.
Summer here is always humid now but it was not like that when I was a child.
In the 1960's and 70's high temps and humidity were only for a couple of weeks in July.
Now it's from the end of May till October.

I used to live in Delaware, turn on the car AC in summer and mist pours in from the vents, absolutely sapping, then winter was Baltic, but sunny and dry.

Clearing paths was great as the snow was always powder (unless your car had been snow ploughed in), so could sweep it to the side, but couldn't make even a snowball with it.

The first time I felt it was nipping out to a leaving do half a mile up the road. Fleece on to keep warm, when I got there I couldn't feel my face, arms or hands. It's only when I got back later I checked the wind chill and it was -20. We have it easy over here, but I do miss the blue skies in winter.

Got a 4x4 car earlier this year as I missed the x-Trail's ability in the snow. Four days before the snow arrives it develops a fault with the 4x4 system and is in the garage!

On the upside the replacement car is also a 4x4 and handled getting home last night with no issues at all.

Snow is taking its time melting here and its a very damp and misty day. Not helped by the hipster muppet two doors down who had a wood burner installed a few years ago thinking it was all so cool. In weather like this the smoke gets caught by the mist and it turns to smog all around the area. We all moved to electric and gas heating to stop this sort of thing but there is always one. It stinks of smoke outside and my car is forever covered in bits of ash...

We had a log burner put in a couple of years ago. It's a Defra approved one for smokeless zones though (even though we're allowed one with smoke where we live) so we get no smoke coming out of the chimney. I was quite looking forward to the picturesque plume of smoke and smell of oak to greet me coming home from work, but it doesn't happen. It does mean that our burner is very very effiient though as it recycles the smoke and gases and burns it again. You can see jets coming in the back of the stove when it's up to heat, almost like having gas jets at the back of the burner.

He's likely burning not properly seasoned wood then too, which will be very smoky, won't burn well and will eventually cover his chimney in deposits that will become flammable and cause a chimney fire.

I had this with EE. I was using up £10 credit in no time. Then I found out I could buy a "pack" for £5 which lasted a week but included plenty of talk time and texts. I was putting £10 on it per week before that. Not sure if whoever you're with offers something similar? Could be worth finding out. It wasn't well advertised by EE (because they want people to just pay the higher prices) and I only knew about it because someone told me and then I found info on it after investigating their site.

Wife backing in to a space in a car park. Moped guy whizzes in to the space in rush to get his 50p delivering a lazy persons happy meal. I call out "Hey, we're reversing in there!"

Argue etc
He walks off and mutters "f&@&ing c&**"
I say, "oi come here"
Him: "don't speak to me like that"

Wtf?

At this point two kids in the car burst in to tears.

It appears to be a thing at the moment to get your McDonald's delivered etc.
I get that take away for delivery was inefficient. The pizza shop had a delivery guy, so did the Indian take away and the Chinese etc and they must have spent most time sitting on their backsides. So getting a small number of freelancers delivering all of them makes some sense. But gone is the customer service. The take away owners no longer have a touch point with the consumer. The delivery guy doesn't care if you think he's rude. He is allocated your delivery by algorithm, not because he's pleasant.

Maybe I dislike them for other reasons. If you order your take away through an app then it makes sense as the take away owner to lower costs by moving to an industrial estate or a shed somewhere and being an anonymous building. Slowly the High Street becomes vacant, loses that evening vibrancy. Don't then complain when high streets start dying if you don't go there to buy your food, clothes etc

I think I'd have reparked his moped for him.

The one thing I noticed when I moved out of Bristol and didn't go back into the city centre for a year, when I did there were suddenly Uber drivers and Deliveroo scooters/ bicycles everywhere! It was like the era of App based employment had suddenly exploded.

Every time I go in now the main problems I encounter are usually with either Deliveroo or Uber drivers / riders. Every trip in I've, without fail, been nearly wiped out by a swerving / u-turning Uber driver and had numerous near misses / cut ups by Deliveroo riders. Often suddenly appearing off pavements etc. The latest was a kid who didn't seem to be entriely concious bombing one of Bristol's steepest busiest hills on the wrong side of the road jabbering away to himself sometimes swerving to avoid oncoming traffic.

It looks to me that the App based nature of employment has no filter or barrier to employment for nutter / morons / selfish idiots, and as a result the city is now full of them.

Quite a few Bristol Uber cars are owned between a few people apparently who can't afford the car on their own, are to trying to make some quick money and have no vested interest in keeping the car dent free, so drive without a care in the world, barging eveyone else out of the way. My experience seems to back this up.

I'm sure there's a few decent Deliveroo riders out there, but in Bristol it often looks like they've opened the doors to the asylum, slapped a few big backpacks on people and set them off to wreak mayhem on the streets and pavements.

There was a tv documentary on deliveroo a few nights ago, seems their deliveries are not what they seem. People order from what they think is a local place but your food can come from an unlicensed back street food place on a local industrial estate, using cheap Labour in unsanitary conditions...

i was in the chinese takeaway last night (i have one once a month or so) and the delivery s were 1.5hrs due to the just eat thing. there have been a few takeaways around here that have told just eat to fekaff. it was also the just eat customers that were complaining.

All of the Deliveroo mob are now moped based. They used to be bicycles when The Monkey was a student but she gave it up after the minimum time as the customers were a-holes. You only had the delivery within a certain radius but people got wise and used a fake post code on their real street/house number - she often ended up a good half mile further than she should have but carried on in the hope of the tip, which was rarely received as it of course took longer to arrive due to the distance. Then the 'peds started arriving and the cyclists were not allocated many runs by the app as the 'peds were faster making customers happier.

There are a dozen or more 'ped delivery riders in Wycombe and they are a complete menace! They use bus/cycle lanes, cut corners at junctions, ignore one-way and no entry signs, ride with their (very cheap) flip-up in the open position which is not legal*, swear at you madly if you dare to remonstrate and fly off the pavements in their hurry to get away. I've collared a police officer and asked why they don't stop them and you get the usual "not enough resources" response, yet scamera vans are still out there...

A sobering thought is that a lot of them probably only have Social/Domestic/Pleasure third party insurance instead of the business use they need. I suggest you keep well away from the little scrotes.

*only a couple of brands/models have dual certification for open and closed highway use - the rest should only be used in the closed position when moving.

...They use bus/cycle lanes, cut corners at junctions, ignore one-way and no entry signs, ride with their (very cheap) flip-up in the open position which is not legal*, swear at you madly if you dare to remonstrate and fly off the pavements in their hurry to get away....

Same in Bristol.

They still have people on bicycles in Bristol too. Unless they're riding around using the jackets and backpack boxes for themselves instead of work.

Wycombe is all hills so getting to any of the estates with a KFC before it goes stone cold is impossible on a bicycle, hence the 'peds taking over around here. In a bigger town where the orders can be better split between short/flat runs and the longer/hillier ones I'm not surprised cycles are still in use.

I still don't use them!

Just had fun using levelling compound for the first time. I needn't have worried it was pretty straightforward. I now have a nice flat floor to tile.

They're a complete menace in this area. It's the reasons why cabbies are now blocking the cycle boxes and shrinking the filter gaps around here

Plus the lack of snow meant I couldn't even have a snow day. So just froze on the bike whilst needing the loo.

Must be something doing the rounds - one of my lads has just phoned to say he might be off tomorrow with a stomach bug, and as I have some kind of virus which is leaving me feeling kind of tired and yuck, I'll have to ride in tomorrow :(

Bloody cold on the bike this morning. When they say freezing fog they aren't ****ing about.

Quite interesting when the inside and outside of your visor simultaneously freeze up whilst travelling at 70 on an unlit duel carriageway with no tail lights visible through the soup.

I once drove from Edinburgh to Felixstowe in freezing fog the whole journey, my washer jets froze up, even with neat washer fluid and by the time we got home there was an inch of ice on my wing mirrors. That was an interesting journey in the car, we considered stopping in hotel overnight it was that bad. I wouldn't have attempted it on the bike

i have never understood why they dont wrap a heating wire round the washer jet hoses with a thermostatic switch.I've got a 17 plate C-max and the windscreen washer froze up on that the other day. I had a quick look under the bonnet and found that there are electrical connections to the jets! I assume that they're heaters. My problem was further downstream nearer the tank. I just let it thaw by itself.

Indeed, and that was my old Saab 900, so you'd have thought they'd have fitted some kind of heater, although it may had had something, and I never knew about it?

It was over 20 years ago & I wasn't as mechanically aware as I am now, although I only know a little bit more than I did then :D

I use the Comma X-treme -26C in cars, don't even bother with anything less than -15 as it will freeze at just below zero. The methanol evaporates off and then it freezes.

You can add Methylated spirits to screenwash which does a good job.

They do. I have heated washer nozzles on this car and previous one. Never had a problem with iced up washer jets with them.

Funnily enough the jets were the one thing that wasn't frozen on my van this morning. Getting in the doors was the problem though. All frozen solid and the locks too. My friend used to work for Nissan and said this time of year they were constantly replacing door handles where people had pulled them off trying to open frozen doors.

I usually have to climb in through the back of my van and kick the doors open from the inside.

Had the heaters on full all day today and was still cold driving. Usually it gets too hot pretty quickly. It has nothing fancy at all, no turbo, manual windows etc, but the one things that's always been great on it is the heat you get out of the engine fairly fast after start up.

back in the day when I used to commute, I would extend my windshield washer tubing and wrap it around one of the radiator hoses. If the nozzles were in the airflow and it was sufficiently cold they would still freeze but in slow moving traffic they would thaw out again.

put some silicone curtain glide spray on the seals.. no more frozen doors :-)

Spray furniture polish, GT85 and armor all plastic treatment all stop doors sticking in icy weather.

I also use rainex on side windows ( don't use it on windscreen as it causes smearing when wipers used ) and ice comes off a lot easier ( like Teflon coating the Windows ).

I worked in the largest antibiotic plant in the world. I got a call at 17.50 one evening before night shift, from the plant manager that the plant was shutting. He said "gotta go and phone the rest of your shift before it's on the 6 o'clock news". I'm so glad I didn't have to tell them, my heart would have broke.

Many years ago I was on a customer site halfway through a system upgrade when I got the phone call that I wsa redundant. So packed up and drove the 100 miles back to the office to be told here is your statutory minimum sod off and don''t come back. So went home and got the phone call where is your car.
My contract says I am entitled to a months notice so pay me properly and you get the car back at the end of the month. so lots of threats of calling the police for my theft of the car.

Then I get another call. Can I go back and finish the upgrade as the customer cannot work with an system with half the guts hanging out. and there is nobody capable of doing it. So I go back to the office and agree a contract with the administrators that sees me employed for a month. They realiased the upgrade I was developing was worth 30 grand to the company and assumed retained staff could do it and I was too expensive and with only 1 year in they could get rid easily.

It gave me time to get a new job and not out of pocket. Unfortunately not everyone was in the same position. One sales guy was on a trip to australia where he was made redundant over the phone. His hotel were told they were creditors, his hire car was not being paid and he had to find his own way home.

Years ago I was recruited to be the system manager of a warehouse & stock control system that ran on DEC equipment. The company had been bought out and an IBM mainframe installed, the intention being that everyone would move over to the IBM and new software would replace the DEC stuff. I was the only one using the DEC.

Two years later, the DEC system was still running and I was headhunted to my previous employer on a contract. At which point, they realised that I was the only person that knew how to keep the DEC system operating (it was running at 50% over its designed capacity and needed constant tinkering). Upshot was I was put on a healthy retainer to be on call for the duration of my 6 months contract and was then offered my old job back on a contract basis.

We have one guy who every weeks walks into the computer room and gives the VAX in there a hug as it has kept him in work for the past 10 years. I suppose we may have got rid a few years ago as our retention agreed with the inland revenue had expired, when the serious fraud decided we needed a good look at and have not been allowed to dispose of any kit. Technically he is the only person in the company with the skills to manage it. Even if I had to remind him how to do a conversational boot the other month.
