I have just spoken to a lady in the Virgin media call centre (located in India) who kept asking me about my wifi connection after I'd told her twice that I was hard wired to the hub. She then asked me to get my iPhone for reasons unknown and didn't believe me when I told her I didn't have a smart phone. It got worse...she then proceeded to tell me I didn't have a problem because her dignostics showed everything was working fine and, if I wanted a tech, it would cost me £99.
It was at this point that I resorted to shouting. I shouted that they should at least employ people with some technical ability in a technical call centre. She hung up.

I called back, this person listened to what I described and said: "we need to send someone."

3 weeks ago my previously reliable connection started dropping packets from 1 to 45 seconds. 1 second is annoying but after about 5 seconds the disconnection starts to manifest itself with page load issues/loss of resolution on video). Skype doesn't like the dropped packets at all. I use Colasoft to ping remote servers and BQM from Thinkbroadband to ping me (it stores it as a graph/chart). I get multiple T3 errors (note: on a Virgin Superhub3 this command: http://192.168.0.1/walk?oids=1.3.6.1.4.1.4491.2.1.20.1.2.1.2 will give the number of T3 timeouts) and critical loss of sync messages in the hub's log.

(for T4 timeouts it is: http://192.168.0.1/walk?oids=1.3.6.1.4.1.4491.2.1.20.1.2.1.3 )

2 techs have been around, the last telling me that someone else locally has the same issue and he will raise a ticket for the network guy to check it. Therein lies the problem with Virgin - there's no way to speak to the network tech (head-end engineer they call him) and no way to find out if he's looked at the issue. You have to keep calling the call centre which doesn't help my stress level.

I think they deliberately act dumb and try to draw out the 'diagnostic' process as long as possible to make it seem like they have actually achieved something. Probably hoping that you will lose your patience and give up.

My router continues to throw up critical errors daily. Which is apparently fine.

yes, mine too...but not if it throws up T3 or T4 errors like this:

{
"1.3.6.1.4.1.4491.2.1.20.1.2.1.2.4":"62",
"1.3.6.1.4.1.4491.2.1.20.1.2.1.2.82":"1",
"1.3.6.1.4.1.4491.2.1.20.1.2.1.2.83":"1",
"1.3.6.1.4.1.4491.2.1.20.1.2.1.2.84":"9",
"1":"Finish"
}

62 errors - these indicate a loss of connection. 1 or 2 would be "normal".

Here's my BQM graph from yesterday:

https://i.ibb.co/GFFYqtZ/4Feb19am.png

The tall yellow spikes indicate high latency which would probably incense me if I was a gamer, the red spikes indicate a break in 'net connection. The extreme left of the chart indicates what my Virgin media looks like most of the time (ok, but not brilliant).

Here's what happens during the red spike:

https://i.ibb.co/CKymxyh/Colasoft-graph.png

This is me pinging the Virgin server in Nottingham for 37 seconds I couldn't see the server, in that time skype would have disconnected, pages wouldn't load with errors declaring "no internet" and videos would buffer.

It started this 3 weeks ago.

They sent us a new TV box that was not compatible with our (admittedly archaic) TV. Once it was plugged in apparently the old box was rendered void and would no longer work with out account. I phoned for help and was laughed at and told to get a new TV! A morning banging my head against a wall and I caved.... and went out and got a TV off someone locally via Gumtree. Not an ideal or cheap solution, but it worked and kept the kids happy on a Saturday.

I have another problem they've never been able to help with. Can anyone explain why my iphone has to have it's wifi turned off and on again and then reconnect to work with Virgin wifi? Every time the phone screen locks / times out and you unlock it again it needs reconnecting. It doesn't happen on any other phone or device in our house. It doesn't happen to my phone in anyone elses house, so it's all down to our wifi / Virgin box. Apparently it's a known issue that no one knows the answer to and has been happening for over a year now. Very frustrating.

might be auto connect on your phone. there might be a function to "remember" or "no log out". it will be particular to the wifi that its connected to in its settings.

but yes the newer virgin hubs are pants.

They sent me a new tivo box too to replace the old obsolete (non tivo) one. The new one is still in its box in the attic since I get all the same channels on Freeview anyway and never have had a program I want to record.

Not as old as our old one was, but fairly old yes... the new one is old too, but just about works.
I tend to afford things just as the world starts to think they're "obsolete".

My current TV is about 18 years old, flat screen with 3 HDMI ports and a scart connection.
Still got a good picture, not so good with night footage and dark scenes.
I would like a new smart TV but while this one does the job perfectly well I'll keep it.
These new ones do have stunning picture quality

Most wi-fi devices like phones, PDA and computers have an 'auto log on' as an option when a wi-fi source you have used before comes within range, they remember the network name and password. For security this is normally not the default setting though.

Might well be more to do with the compression applied from whatever source you use. Visible banding in dark scenes is unlikely to get improved with a better or newer TV.

Obviously TVs in shops use really high quality source material.

Sky HD box but it was the same with the standard Sky box.

My sister's Sony TV is visibly better than our TV, and that's either with her old crappy sky box or using my portable hdd with our media files on it.

This is something that happens a lot these days with both parents and spouses, partners, etc.
(or maybe I'm just getting old)
Just remember, this day was always going to come.
Family members can only provide so much care before they are overwhelmed and
most try for too long to keep their loved ones at home when in reality they would
be better off in a full time care facility.
And it's more than OK to get out now and enjoy yourself a bit.
You've earned it.

You are going to encounter some strange feelings over the next few weeks so keep checking in because we'd all like to help if we can.

Can't have been easy for you, but as you say mentally you'd reached breaking point.

But as I found out when my mum went into care, the burden is taken off your shoulders, doesn' stop you feeling guilty, but she's now got a team looking after her 24/7. So that's a good thing, so long as the care home is a good one.

My gripes blooming trivial to Bibs

I'm looking for a car to replace the cheap Astra I bought to replace the workhorse Zafira that I'd had for nearly 15years. The Astra is fine for short journeys, but bloody uncomfortable over 30 miles, much like the Sv is without a replacement seat.

Can I find anything within my parameters that isn't a long drive, bearing in mind I want a test drive and then I'll have to go back to collect it, so I prefer the seller to be near to a mainline railway station.

The search continues!

I do so hope I find a new contract soon so I can get out of the house, mainly due to the racket coming from down the road. Three large detached houses just round the corner from me are about to be demolished and wretched flats put up in their place by a greedy developer. We badly need larger homes in Wycombe as they are in short supply and anyone wanting one is more and more having to leave the town as it is filling up with rabbit hutch-sized places instead. We already have thousands of them! The racket is coming from a bloke in hi-viz and hard hat with a mini piling rig taking soil samples from the site. These flats will be an utter eyesore on the neighbourhood and will mean parked cars everywhere.

Stay tuned for more moans as this saga unfolds over the next year or two :(

Happened in the street we lived in in Bristol. Every house slowly bought up from elderly one car owning couples and converted to two flats. Each flat had young couples move in with a car each. Space for one car outside each house, but now 4 cars per house. Chaos.

We moved out to the suburbs for some space in general. Now, every year, the field we're next to has planning applications for 600 houses. When (not if) it goes through I'm dreading the years of noise and construction disruption more than the end result.

The f$%^&ng mayhem outside my kids school every morning from 4x4 idiot parents screaming around the roads and parking up the pavements, on double yellows, over local residents' drives (and the shouting that ensues, often involving lots of language and aggression not fitting for outside a Primary school), on the zig zags, on junctions, across the dropped kerbs (then getting out with pushchairs and not even realising the irony ffs!).

It's a warmish nice day here so we decide to try and ride it. Daughter in cargo bike, son rides himself now. Absolute f^*^&^ng moron decides it's a good idea to overtake on a junction that I'm turning right out of, positioned in the middle of the lane, indicating. He ends up on the wrong side of the road waiting at the junction. So impatient he couldn't wait a second. Tries to get out quick as people are trying to get in to the junction on their side. See we are there and turning right but does the "pretending not to realise", avoiding eye contact and narrowly avoids going over the top of use as he screams out of the junction to run away from his f%ked up situation he's created. Then parks up outside his shop less than 100 metres away in the High St, so I ask him what he's doing and he denies everything. Ignorant moron.

And that is exactly why so many people don't walk or ride to school and get ferried in 4x4 tanks. A really messed up situation!

=== Not a great start to the day. Really shaken up and it will stay with me full of adrenalin all day now. ===

Same as any school these days, at drop off time. I had to drive my daughter to school once a week, as she had cello lessons, the cello is almost as big as her. Every time, there'd be someone parked at the exit to the school on the double yellows, restricting my view to the main road.

Plenty of kids cycle to my daughter's school, but most cycle on the pavements, normally as a cyclist I'd not be happy about this, but the roads so busy with parents on the school run, it's too dangerous good them. Quite ironic really, if they didn't drive their kids to school, the road would be much safer for their kids to cycle to school!

It's a good job that we are all living in a simulation, if this were real life it would be really exasperating.

I wonder if other countries have "jobsworth" or is it a UK thing. I guarantee when I call these institutions I always forget to get the name of the person who gives me the answer. I actually spoke to two advisers to confirm the £5 thing. And they didn't mention that only paying that amount would put me in arrears. They also didn't mention that being in arrears would mean I cannot apply for a payment holiday.

Mine has just pointed out that I haven't paid much in recently so have asked I pay at £768 in the next couple of weeks or if i can't afford that they'll remove my overdraft facility and demand £2200 back in one go!!! This is due to their "policy of being a responsible lender" !!?

How does that work then exactly? Can't afford to pay in much so we'll ask you to pay in more, and even more if you can't afford the first amount!?

Banks tend to have all the analytics they need, they know your income and expediture patterns. These, they can divide into the necassary/luxury/frivalous etc. Meaning they tend to know the level of debt you can afford and more importantly they stand a very good risk of getting back when they squeeze. They want you to have debt, just affordable.

30 years ago, my bank was on site and we shared a dividing wall within the main office block. They were even on the site switch. So not unusual to be summoned in for chat by the branch manager. Same bank that then wanted people to take out insurance for loans despite knowing exactly what redundacy entitlement people would be entitled to. We know the company is having difficulty no insurance, no loan.

Hermes...There is a bell for a reason, so I know you are at the door. I am not physic. I cannot hear you knock when I am in the office at the bottom of the garden. Yes I have a bell sounder there so I know there is someone at the door.

My postman is brilliant, if he needs a signature he actually comes through the gate and down to the office.

If Hermes had a decent tracking system like some, I would know the van is down the road etc.

Useless why do some people use them. If course they are cheap for a reason.

I use Hermes a lot due to price and I drive past the drop off shop most days so a zero fuel and time cost.

I find that the vast majority of people are happy with Hermes BUT those that aren't will have had consistently bad service. This leads me to believe it's the last link in the chain that's the problem, bad delivery driver = bad overall service. Unfortunately folk look at the total price including postage and always go for the cheapest. If I list something on eBay with multiple postage options folk always choose the cheapest.

Again it's down to the last link in the chain, the delivery driver.

having done a bit of deliveries in the past i can tell you that most couriers dont use bells as some of them dont work so a good knock is better.

the trick with Hermes is the special instructions. if you want your door bell rung then tell the sender to put it on the special instructions otherwise the courier will usually knock. or put a sign up pointing at the bell saying, couriers please use bell...>

Most modern doorbells are wireless and people can't be 4rs3d to replace batteries, and some modern PVC doors don't have knockers ( OK maybe the female ones). One courier who delivered to us told me a tale of trying to deliver his previous parcel in Ironbridge ( near to us ) in Shropshire, which is built on the side of a gorge of the river Severn ( average gradient 1:3 ) with twisting streets and little alleyways. He could not find one address so knocked on a door to ask, he got a right mouthful and the guy didn't tell him anyway apparently he was not on good terms with the neighbour ( who had a house up a narrow alleyway just down the street ) took the poor courier half an hour to get someone to direct him, you don't need many of those in a day - we are always taking parcels in for neighbours and I feel really sorry for couriers working for minimum wage 16 hours a day 7 days a week under terrible conditions.. made worse by having to deal with Joe public who orders a memory stick off internet to save a £1 and then some poor guy has to deliver it at 8-30 at night and gets moaned at for his efforts.

Most of my couriers are ok, but I'm fed up with one particular postman and our Hermes person who insist on banging on the door, after ringing the doorbell.

This is after telling this particular postman not to do this. luckily he's not our full time postman.

Couriers that deliver to us ( different companies and post men ) ring and also use the knocker, they are probably fed up of peoples doorbell not working - some of our neighbours and my brother in law in particular I never know if their bells are working and end up knocking their door after trying the bell a few times.

Computer has done it's yearly redownload of all emails that have already been received, read and erased, three times today. "Downloading 12,083 messages..." Takes ages each time. Then erasing them all again is impossible as Mail seems to think they already exist in the trash, so won't accept a duplicate. Trying to work out what has redownloaded amongst all the messages from the year that I actually want to keep is a nightmare. Has taken huge chunks of the day just to work out what is going on. Just had to re-erase loads of messages and hope I haven't selected anything I need.. business and accounts stuff. The whole process has locked up and crashed the comptuter several times too and has needed safe mode starts and disc permissions repaired each time to allow anything at all to open. Very frustrating and a huge waste of time.

Mmm, I don't know about that. I think I could point you to a huge number of people who are definitely not enjoying being on benefits, a number of whom have found it so stressful that they've topped themselves. :-(

I'm between contracts again and although it's rather nice for the first three or four weeks it's no fun when it stretches out to three months. I set my day rate to allow for this but the last twelve months have been pretty poor for me in terms of weeks worked verses not and if nothing else boredom can anxiety can creep in to your life in equal measure. Fingers crossed the interview I had yesterday brings good news. I cannot imagine how people on benefits long term cope, especially if they're used to working.

I've been on the receiving end of benefits myself, yet have been in gainful employment for many years now since.

I could look down this street and find quite a few who haven't worked in 20yrs+ or indeed since they were old enough to work, simply because they don't want to.

Not at all the same people

Badly is the answer depending on the benefits. This is my second time on long term sick. On the first I got DLA and was as well off as working. This time I'm on ESA and because I have a pension of more than £72 pounds per week I have been awarded £0.00 per week. As it is my pension doesn't quite cover our bills so our savings are going down month on month. This is a little bitter / sweet, in that had I not worked and saved I would be in a different situation but at least I can manage (without to much tax payers help) and at 65 & 66 other pensions come on line. On the boredom front try advrider.com, start with "from Estonia with love"

Hope the interview pays off:p

i'm dreading having to go though all the shizz again. in a few weeks i'll have no income now the Mrs B is in care. they wont care that i have bad heart problems and that my legs dont work properly so i'll be forced to look for work.......

to all the youngsters on the forum.. i would advise you to start to think about care when your old and decrepit unless you want to sit there in your own filth.

dont bother buying a house if you plan on passing it down to your kids.. they wont see it.

My brother got made redundant after 50 years working and paying taxes and NI, he was 63 and when he went to see what benefits he could get he was told we can't pay you any benefits because you have assets ! Turns out his assets was the house he has worked hard for 50 years to buy. What makes it worse is that so called asylum seekers ( economic migrants ) with large families get housed ( some in very expensive areas of London) and paid benefits ( extra benefits the more kids they have) without ever having paid a penny into the system.

Makes me think I may go for equity release and get all the money out of the house that I can and waste it and then live in the house rent free till I get put into care and there will only be enough equity left in the house to cover the interest of lifetime mortgage - sounds like a good plan..

yup, the moment you own your property your a target for the local council. council property/land grabbing is rife up here.

they will be changing the law again soon so you will never be able to pass your assets down to your family if you have to be put into care.

whats struck me lately is that i could go to Thailand or somewhere like that and live a very good life with the assets i have instead of looking forward to being put into some **** stinking care home and being treated like cattle.

If we find a cure for malaria, northern Thailand would be a very attractive place to retire to. The Thai language is hard for westerners to learn, but I'm sure I'd get by.

My plan is to sell up and move to Fiji once the kids are independent but before I get to "retirement age", at about 55yrs they'll both be earning I'm guesstimating. There's no malaria there, just a bit of Dengue fever you hear about now and then. English is the first language, the people are lovely and the living is simple. As long as you don't need your luxuries and are happy with a simple but happy existence then it's a great place to go live....

I think F$100K (~£65K) investment will get you residency without issue which is about the price of a nice off the beaten track, within 5 minutes walk from the sea, property in some of the more remote locations which to be honest are better anyway.

I've got it a little easier as I married a citizen of the country, I can go live native style for next to nothing if push comes to shove :)

You only live once...

Don't think i'm going to be in a position where mine have left the house & earning before we can sell up & move on or downsize.

But if they do, then one option for us is to move to Germany, but to the old East. Plenty of cheap properties to do up, and my wife has loads of relatives there.

Wish we'd bought the house next to her Auntie, big 4 bed-roomed house, huge garden, in the hills in a beautiful part of rural East Germany.Needed doing up, but my wife's uncle was loved DIY

Original on the market for €20000, sold for €5000 about 10 years ago :(. Its not as cheap now, but we thought about buying a newly refurbished 2 bed-roomed flat for our holidays, and that was only €30000

Electrical block connectors! Why do they never want to come apart for hours of wrestling and then they suddenly fall open once you've scuffed all the skin off your knuckles trying to reach fingers and hands in under the tank to get to them! An hour in and I realise removing the air box would have been the quicker option to access them, but I didn't want to waste time doing it.

I know that is tongue in cheek.

When my missus was off work recovering from cancer, she had exhausted her NHS sick pay entitlement and had to claim benefits. This meaning that despite being awarded an allowance, she also had to attend the job centre every fortnight to help her get back to work. Yes it was understood by all that she had a job, but was too ill to do it.

She had to have interviews with a lady suffering MS and in a wheel chair. More of a friendly chat, and we learned a bit about the interviewer who had been a corporate HR director prior to the MS and had taken a career back step to position she could handle with her problems. But several times we got a phone call not to bother coming in as the lady was ill.

I guess the government has to show itself as a responsible employer of disabled and make allowances for people with health conditions. (Unlike the NHS who have a zero tolerance of nurses being ill)

Well at the final "Interview" Lynnes said she would be returning to work as otherwise she was to be dismissed and was informed by the Job Centre lady, "But you need a new coat and shoes to get to work" and issued a voucher together with 6 months of £100/month to help her ease her way back to work.

I guess my message is that there was (Maybe gone now) some support to help the ill/disabled into work. Finding a tolerant employer is a totally different ball game!

give in one hand and take in the other.. yes i got a warm homes discount on my fuel bill but SSE have just increased their prices which will work out at the same as what i got for my warm homes.

been looking around at prices and i'm shocked at how much i can save its £370 a year saving. most of the cheep suppliers dont give warm home discounts but i'll be loosing that the next time round anyway.

Heorot
01-03-19, 05:08 PM
One way to mitigate the increases is to have a fixed price deal. Mine is for 2 years (another year to go) with Npower so I have avoided the price hikes this time around. I also pay by direct debit, have a dual fuel deal and don't get paper statements. All those choices reduce the cost and give peace of mind for 2 years.
