View Full Version : Gripe of the day - What is yours?
DRLs that lead drivers to think their lights are on/are automatic thus leaving the rear of the car unlit, an awful idea! Seen it numerous times at silly times of the AM when there should be zero question of checking the stalk on the left is twisted forward.
Again, that's down to the driver. Many people equally leave a lit car park at night and don;t turn lights on . . . . driver error. The reason for most accidents.
See what I mean about posts going out of control once cycling gets mentioned.
Time to agree to disagree and move on
It's too tiring and negative
Its a passionate subject for all.

I think we all agree that inconsiderate people can be found in all types of vehicle.
They aren't ignorant cyclists, pedestrians or drivers. They are just *******s.
Great thing about the censorship is you can now insert your own 7 letter expletive [emoji1787]

Another customer based gripe from me I'm afraid...
Looked at a job 10 days before Christmas, complete house replumb from the external shut off inwards including all new central heating, new kitchen and new bathroom.
Gave a quote, he accepted it and agreed I'd start on January 5th. I booked my gas safe engineer and the chippie.
Got a text from him yesterday evening saying he had found someone who can start it earlier so he doesn't need me to do the job now.

Not a massive gripe but what the hell has hapened to the price of second hand bikes in the last few months? Browsing some this evening and bikes I bought at dealers in recent times are now about £500+ more as private sales? Many bikes are fetching prices near what they were new 10 to 15 years ago! I know lots won't actually sell at asking price, but quite a few are.

It's the same with van prices at the moment, I was looking at replacing my van earlier in the year around the £8/9k region. Those same vans are now going for £12/13k

Sounds like a 'contract' of sorts was in place if he's accepted the quote and he's now breached it by unreasonably cancelling. Unless there's something written down I know it's more challenging to win but you could at least serve up some grief as payback to the 'customer' by threatening to sue for loss of profit or similar. (I guess you won't ever want his business again but it's not unreasonable to expect to be treated fairly.)

Supply and demand I think: Certainly demand for home delivery, and hence suitable vehicles, must have increased dramatically due to Covid 'stuff'. I think being a delivery driver is the only way for some to try to earn a living right now, having lost jobs in other industries that have been affected by the constraints.

TBH I can't be bothered with all that, just not worth the effort. He's a property developer that I've done work for before and if he wants me to do any work for him again it'll be at double my normal day rate

From what I understand there's a few factors,
1, as you say the need for delivery drivers as that's gone through the roof now
2, 30% less new vans and 4x4s (navara that sort of thing) have been registered this year so less used vans on the market
3, with people not going abroad for holidays there's a lot being bought to be converted to camper vans

Fair comment, I suspected as much. I was only thinking about the 'sport' from making him stop and think by sending a warning (low effort only) but if he won't sweat at the possibility of action being taken against him then definitely not worth burning any bridges if there could be decent future work still possible. Tie him in more firmly when he's 'accepting' your next quote too?

Good points. I hadn't realised new registrations were down so much, so that drop in trickle down to used market will be significant.
As for your point 3, coincidentally I've been considering the same for a while (still not enough funds though so I'm unlikely to be shopping anytime soon)

I'm in the middle of doing a camper conversion, I started November last year with buying a van. It's probably about 50% done but I have most of the stuff to get it to 90% done, need to buy a sink/hob and foam for mattress and seating then it's just time to finish putting it all together.
I think by the end of it I'll be about £4K into it and that includes buying the van

It's been mentioned in the biking mags & websites for a while now, as sad above, fewer new registrations because of Covid so used bikes are at a premium.

As I've been stuck working from home since mid-March I have gotten rather attached to my 11am ritual of grinding some beans and brewing a mini French press of coffee every day. Yes it adds five minutes to the prep and you have to rinse/wash the pot afterwards, but the brew is MILES better than anything instant and way greener than any pod system. Plus the press takes up a lot less room than a dedicated machine.

Weather forecast in Kent looked favourable so planned to go for a short ride, got the SV out of hibernation, pressed the starter and ... click click click! Only 11v in the battery. Thats what you get when you don't use the bike for weeks on end eh! My fault entirely as I neglected to use my battery charger/conditioner too. Oh well ... on charge now so hoping to go out for the first time in six weeks in about an hour, time for checking tyres, fuel, chain lube etc.
Stuck in indoors Snow and fog this morning cant even use the bike roll on spring.:(

I’ve been trying to get a reasonably priced van for a while, in the past 12 month I’ve seen the prices Rocket before my eyes (needless to say I’m still vanless ) . It’s as you say , covid/brexit camper conversions and also stupid Instagram goons.
My boiler guy bought a brand new transporter about 12 months ago, he says it’s now worth more than he paid second hand - and I believe it .
What van did you go for?
I’ve struggled to find anything under 5k that hasn’t been shagged into obliteration by tradeys and then given a polish and marketed after catastrophic mot failure/clocking.

I've given up looking for a van at the moment and sticking with the mk7 transit for now. I'm hoping once the extended ulez or what ever it is in London later this year will mean more people getting themselves Euro 6 vans will mean more 2nd hand vans on the market.

GOTD - the standard of driving. It reminds me why i try to avoid being on the roads (car or bike) during the day. I seem to spend more of my driving time/ability avoiding eejits who are either trying to crash deliberately, or are so unaware of what's going on they don;t realise the carnage they're creating.

Everybody and their dog is after vans now, with increase in home deliveries, even Royal mail are short of vans, our post used to arrive about lunchtime, but past 6 months or so was arriving about 6 in the evening, spoke to our postie and he said the Royal mail had them working morning and afternoon shifts due to shortage of vans, and we were on the afternoon route.....

The more automation fitted to vehicles ( some newer cars even have semi-auto steering that will try to keep you within white lines ) the less attention 'drivers' pay to surroundings. The Tesla autopilot is a good example, no matter how many times people are told that autopilot is a glorified cruise control numpties still drive hands off watching a video. There should be only two types of car - fully manual control or fully autonomous ( don't hold your breath for the last one, it has all gone awfully quite and a lot of companies have pulled out, Uber pulled out just recently ). The in-between semi-autonomous are never going to be safe as drivers get lazy and distracted.
Completely agree, i think they forget the car is not driving itself but more assisting you in the driving. Not great in Countries like the UK where a lot of road signs are not clearly displayed/visible, White lines are faded/new and old ones side by side etc.
I don't think fully autonomous will catch on for most people, as you will still responsible for the vehicle and anything that should happen. You may as well catch a Taxi for when you want to go out and drinking and not want to drive . . . .
ethariel
03-01-21, 03:40 AM
Fully autonomous and not on tracks or a rail system is a decade away at least, as it stands if anyone market's one then the liability for any accident will drop on thier doorstep and will have to prove they were not at fault (pretty much be judged guilty till proven innocent), no company on earth will take that liability.
Now when in the US, the lobbyists get behind having the law changed then it's going to be more of a reality.

One of the biggest problems with Tesla is the marketing name. Someone tells you your car has 'auto-pilot' you could be forgiven for thinking it automatically pilots itself like a plane. Most people do not investigate what the technology actually is. They should use the same name for it as everyone else - Adaptive Cruise Control.

I really hope so, it's dire at the min.
Not even that big 2.5x3, but I'm only doing it in the evenings and had a few delays getting stuff over christmas (still awaiting stuff now) and had quite a few curveballs like having to remove a chimney in the middle of it, fit window lintels and the floorboards being rotten. Plus while I had the floor up I fitted downlights and an extractor fan for the kitchen downstairs. All new pipe work and all new waste runs, walls battened and boarded. It's been that much of a saga I'm almost enjoying tiling!
All I can offer is a partially tiled bathroom and a sleeping bag  (better than most south yorkshire hotels to be honest)

It's pretty tough, I'm able to do noisy work after work from about 6pm until about 8pm to be fair to neighbours, then measuirng planning and ordering stuff or doing quiet jobs until about 10.30pm/11 and same again the next day. Nothing more frustrating then rushing a cut at 7.59pm and having to wait until the next day to redo. Can you get in during the day Bibio?

Fair point. I've not gone through the kitchen ceiling yet just out the external wall above ceiling level and run the allu ducting in some over generous existing boxing-in for an RSJ previously installed from above via the bathroom floor. The only hole will be for the cooker hood to cover, which I suppose will be sealed by nature but I'll double check when I'm at that point!
Downlights are firerated.

That's interesting DJ as I've been wondering about this. My girls are both spending most of their time with me at the moment, but their mother lives in Shrewsbury. I was unsure about the movement between the two households given I'm in Wales and Shrewsbury is (allegedly) in Wales.
(Yes,yes, we all know Amwythig belongs to Cymru really but we'll let that pass for now).
I was never entirely clear on the situation regarding crossing the border even though we are joined households on account of my girls.

That's just rude. The doggy bye-laws around here means you have to have to have two bags per dog (use plus a spare) and there really is no excuse. Letting your dog poop on someone's driveway is anti-social to say the least, although generally the dog cannot help it. I was caught without a bag the other morning, when Jemima was caught short and pooped on the pavement - I just went home, got bags and picked it up. I'd never leave it for someone else and have in fact picked up other people's dog mess. My dogs normally go off-piste in the woods, but I (nearly) always have bags - they are part of the 'walkies bum-bag' kit.

Yes, you can travel and move the Kids between households. Its covered under the exceptions for all regions (my kids live 400 miles away in Scotland - i've done a couple of trips).
The same for them even if they were older, if you and their Mother are in a support bubble you can move between households.
There is no limitation (as far as i am aware) on where your support bubble can be - i know many people who live hours away from their Family and are in a support bubble with them, as they live on their own with a small support bubble locally.

RE. The ongoing insurance palava, they've called me to say they won't pay my £400 a month car hire under my comprehensive policy but would have paid the £400 a day type hire credit agreement if arranged through them. The advisor wouldn't justify why. I started a breach of contract complaint claim and annoyingly it does actually say it in their policy documents, so that's a non-starter. A manager actually rang me back and to be fair to him was quite straight (and self/industry-incriminating) and admitted they get a kick back from their 'service' provider which is why they only use them and even said "I have these chats with appauled customers all the time because no one ever reads their policy booklet because, why would you, it's 40 pages long".
Great people. Anyway, claiming it from the third party insurer myself.
It did strike some instant rage, if she hadn't come back to clean it I probably would have been following them home and laying a mighty log on their doorstep. There are a lot of dogwalkers on the street and the majority are fine. The two in a row is new, so I imagine not a coincidence.

The rules on the children of separated parents would cover this surely? Meaning that travel is allowed - at least until your children are 18?
Ah now that's the thing Mike. They are both 18 (twins).

Looks like I did 36mph in a 30mph zone at some point recently. I don't remember it at all. The kind people who've sent me the NIP do though. Damn. Will this be a fine / points?

I haven't had one before. I've heard they are being done remotely at the moment. Ironically, via Zoom.

Current gripes for me,
car and vans costing me at the moment, just replaced both front lower arms, drop links and track rod ends on the car. Had its mot this morning, needs 2 new tyres and rear brakes doing
Van needs another new egr valve and then putting in for its mot
Worst thing is the other half is on unpaid leave due to the current lockdown so money is going to be tight for a couple of months

We decided to do a blitz of updates to site inductions. Total of 21 contractors in their "teams" sat through the video, filled the info sheet in and did the quiz. This morning it was revealed that the first inductees wife tested positive yesterday, he'd went and got a test himself last night that returned positive this morning.
Cheers fella...

I had one too Adam, 37 in a 30. I don't remember doing it either. I'm probably going to get a fine and points as I was had about four years ago for 67 in a 60 so am unlikely to get another speed awareness course. :-(

What does the NIP say? It usually identifies the location and whether it's a fixed camera or mobile unit.
Here's a checklist:
- what date does the NIP give for the alleged offence, and when did you receive it? If you received it over 14 days after the offence, the NIP has not been correctly served and is invalid. If this is the case, google "RAC letter for late NIP" This does work.
- if you received it WITHIN 14 days, check very carefully whether you were at the stated location at the stated time - number plate misreads are more common than you think from fixed GATSO cameras.
- if it all checks out as legit and you were on that road, at that time, just fill in the form and return it. Take copies of the docs before you send and get proof of postage when you send it. Documents can and do get lost in the post or by the speed camera unit, and they'll try and hit you with a 'failure to declare' notice which is 6 points and £300 fine, plus a big insurance hit. If you have proof of what you sent and that it was sent, then it's THEIR problem.
- for 36 in a 30 you should be offered a speed awareness course. £88 and 2.5 hours of your time on Zoom. It's not a conviction so no hit on your insurance.

Gary, see what I posted above about Adam's NIP.
As long as the new alleged speeding offence is over three years after the last offence, you should be offered a course: https://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q584.htm
(That website gets it slightly wrong, the correct dates are actually when the offences occur, not when the courses are attended).

It’s a genuine one Craig, it has all the correct bits on it including the location. Reassuring to know I will probably be offered the naughty boy speeding course though, rather than points and a fine. It’s at least three years, maybe even four since the last time I got zapped.

I was exactly the same. Depends where you were caught ( or at least it did but maybe not now if course is done remotely) Dorset and Hampshire are not in the national speed awareness course programme. Unfortunately I was caught in Dorset and as I live in Yorkshire I took the £100 fine and 3 points.
If you can, do the speed awareness course.

Check your licence online, it'll say when your last heinous crime was committed :-)
My gripe of today. Camera batteries
Despite having 3 different Canon battery chargers, not one of them fits the battery I'm trying to charge, and I can't find the specific charger!
Although I tried charging it via USB, but its not charging, so the battery is probably knackered anyway.
Ordered a compatible battery & charger via Amazon, so hopefully I'll be able to use it for photo a day 2021 :-)

But first we will keel-haul him (had to google that one, I'm a convert!) and replace all his bikes with a new parralel twin SV with the fork seals fitted upside down and a concrete cast seat
A minor gripe in the big scheme of things, tv related (again). Over the years I've been following a couple of US tv series: 'The 100' and 'Marvels: Agents of Shield' both were shown on E4 and both series were on their last season but E4 has decided it won't show either. Both series have been shown in the US last year and E4 normally shows them in the September of the year they're shown in the US.
I'd mentioned previously about maybe joining Netflix but, apparently, they're not showing them either, presumably because E4 still has the rights.

I have been watching American Chopper ( don't know why their bikes are crap although some of the workmanship is clever ) They are now on repeats of repeats and back to the original feuding. Don't know how they have finished up in 2021.

There's a really useful site for finding where content is streaming:
https://www.jus****ch.com/uk
It'll tell you which programmes are available on the various platforms, and the cost if relevant. Not 100%, but works most of the time.

Trying to find a second hand GSXR K3 fairing that isn't fubar.
It might be easier to find a hen with teeth.
The ones that are intact - unlike mine - still show signs of road rash.
Mine disintegrated on impact.

Yeah, I do. I just really dislike Insurance companies after the T Bone incident.
I'd never see it again once they take it for inspection. They'd write the bike off for a few bits of plastic.
