Yeah I saw Q - lol
Stews are good Viney because they are like big hugs in a bowl. They may take long to cook, but what can be better than spending 5 minutes in a morning chopping a few things and shoving in slow cooker or casserole in the bottom of a low oven and leaving it. Later that day, you get home from a day out in the freezing cold and...oh look...dinner is ready and you don't have to do a thing :-)
I will soon be making a big batch of my favourite though. A good Welsh Cawl. Nom nom nom

Fair enough V. You wouldn't have liked the fillet beef in oyster sauce I did the other night then. About 20 seconds in a flaming wok....pretty much raw save for the heat turning it to butter :-)
V - you so need educated! Stews are great things (i'm crap at cooking them) and this is from someone who like steaks rare and when Alex is about blue.
GG described to a tee - hugs in a bowl esp with dumplings

Haha - no! Stir fry is a blanket term for cooking over high heat. There could be millions of beef stir fry recipes...mine was fillet beef in oyster sauce.....;-)
Tara:-
500g diced casserole beef or stewing steak or get a skirt and dice it yourself.
3 potatoes
2 carrots
1 onion
2 cloves garlic (optional)
2pints beef stock (if using stock cubes, use 1 cube per pint of water)
seasoning
1 sprig of rosemary
a little oil and butter
100g self-raising flour
50g beef suet
5-7tbsp cold water
salt
chopped parsley if you want
Heat a little oil and butter over the hob in a casserole dish (medium-high heat). Add enough meat to cover 50% of the base. Don't stir, just leave it for 1 minutes to brown on the bottom. When brown, turn and brown the other side. Remove and set aside. Repeat until all meat is browned and set aside. Add 1 roughly chopped onion to the pan (with a little extra oil if needed) and turn down the heat to medium-low. Cook the onion until translucent and add the chopped garlic, cooking for 1 more minute. Then add the chopped or sliced carrots and cook for 1 minutes before adding in the stock, rosemary and the beef. Pop a lid on and turn down to simmer. Simmer for 2 hours (or put in the bottom of a really low oven for the day).
After 2 hours, put the chopped potatoes in and cook for 5 minutes. Then make your dumplings by putting the flour, suet, a pinch of salt and the parsley in a bowl and add the water bit by bit until you have a firm but pliable dough. Roll into 8 equal balls and sit them on top of the stew (if the stock has got too low, add more so that the dumplings sit in the liquid. The liquid should come half way up the dumplings). Cover and cook for a further 20 minutes and you're done. The dumplings don't need turning, they will steam and stay light and fluffy.
This is a really simple, traditional beef stew and dumplings. Lots of chefs jazz it up with red wine and lots of herbs and faffy stuff. Bollsocks to that. I like it simple like this :-)
Reeder - yeah but these are beauties. Don't mind normally but went swimming yesterday and it must have looked like i'd been beaten up again! It looks like i've been held and I really don't know what I've done.
The rest were easy to work out - climbing a pole can be hard work!!

T - if you want the Welsh Cawl recipe, let me know. I am a purist when it comes to this stew as it is hands down the best you'll ever have if you do it properly, but that involves roasting a lamb shoulder or leg overnight. Letting it cool, stripping the meat and making a stock with the bones for 24hrs, then using the stock the next day to cook the stew. It's not like most stews where the veg holds form. In a cawl, it is cooked long and slow and with all the veg and is only ready when everything has pretty much gone to mush. You just cannot beat the flavour that you get from doing the whole process yourself.
Morning Reeder, WP, MM and anyone else that's turned up :-)

Yeah, it's not exactly a special one...lol. It's beef and veg in stock...lol.
A nice alternative to a british stew is an asian broth. Steam some chicken breasts and shred when cool. To make it really healthy, don't use oils or butter. For the broth, finely slice 1inch fresh ginger and 1 carrot into matchsticks and slice 2 cloves garlic and 1/2 red chilli (seeds in for heat or out for mild). Put it all into a large saucepan with 2 pints chicken stock, bring to the boil and then turn down to simmer. Pop in 2 star anise and simmer gently for 20 minutes. Put some cooked noodles into the bottom of serving bowls with the shredded chicken breast and pour the broth over the top. Finish with a little chopped spring onion and some chopped fresh coriander. This will serve two. It will have an earthy warmth from the ginger and garlic, a little kick from the chilli and the broth is amazing with the anise flavour. Hmmm, I am going to do this for me and Dan tonight. Might do a video...lol.

I have to admit it is really hard to cook. Not for the difficulty rating, that is easy...it's just the smells of lamb roasting and then the stock bubbling away. By the time it is ready it's like everything else in the world can wait, because you did for this soup and now it's here and nothing is going to spoil it. It's the best taste in the world.
My company takes the ****. I'm getting in trouble for someone else not doing their job properly.
A company desperately needed their order and I had taken their account off hold, but we didn't bother delivering as the transport lady didn't check. However the other day when a company WAS on hold they couldn't raise a proof of delivery because of this, so they just decided to hand write one and send it in anyway even though they weren't allowed to have anymore goods.
If people could be bothered to do their job properly and CHECK then these things wouldn't happen.
The lady's excuse today was "they were still on my stop list". Well dear, we agreed a few months ago that we will no longer be taking the time to email every single time someone comes off stop, as we're then emailing you about 3 times every day. All you needed to do was see that a delivery was due and look at their customer record to see if they were able to have it!!
And breathe.

What your brand new bike?
Yup, now ive had the rear and one front apart doesnt really look like they needed doing, but no where in the service history does it say its had the calipers stripped and rebuilt, better to get it done and the pistons greased seeing as ill be riding it all winter :D (except for snow) it also had new pads all round fitted by a dealer 2 months and 900 miles ago and thats all they did, didnt bother cleaning the calipers out
